Lena Horne - Stormy Weather (1943)

Posted by MarkusRTK
January 27, 2008

"Here's the full version of a performance that can be found truncated elsewhere on YouTube -- from the 1943 film of the same name, the great Lena Horne delivers a sizzling performance of her signature song. (I wish I had the full dance that follows it, which includes some amazing ballet. If anyone has a full-length version, please post it or get in touch with me!) "

jdolce101 (6 months ago) Where has the music gone over the years??...It doesn't get much better than this. Gotta love the fabulous 40's!

MyCali93 (5 months ago) Lena Horne is and still is beautiful...She paved the way for a beauty like Dorothy Dandridge who paved the way for a beauty like Diana Ross who has paved the way for beauties like Beyonce. Miss horne was the original classy black woman.

dback1221 (5 months ago) Last I heard, Alicia Keys is on the short list to play Horne. I think she'd do well handling the vocals, but lip-synching to Horne for integrity's sake would work, too. Jackson is a remarkable talent performer-wise, but Horne is a goddess; I think Keys is a better physical match. No diss on Janet's talent (plentiful), nor Keys (amazing), but anyone who wants to play Horne--one of the most beautiful women, let alone black women, EVER--and a brilliant jazz artist has gotta bring the goods!

gulfgypsy (5 months ago) Lena had it all: Beautiful, one of a kind voice and class.

dave00004483 (4 months ago) There is a clip (elsewhere on YouTube) of Lena Horne singing this same song 55 years later, in 1998. And that version is even better than this one! I bet it would be almost impossible to find any other singer with so long a career.
****
1940semochild (4 months ago) Immortal song, definately Lena's signature. Love it one of my favorites. The movie was pretty good too. Plus Ms. Horne was such a beauty :)

****

sanfranphono (3 months ago) Lena Horne upstaged her model Ethel Waters not only in Cabin in the Sky, but also Stormy Weather is a song that Ethel Waters created at the Cotton Club Parade of 1933.
Check out my video response above for Water's rendition, as well as Horne's 1943 first studio recording, which is about 20% faster than the languishing movie version.
Thanks for posting the clip !

TheCharleycat (2 months ago)  i like lena horne's version of stormy weather but ella fitzgerald did an amazing cover of it too :)
****
slownoman (2 months ago)  Charley, don't get me wrong. Lena was a great singer, and this was her transformative number. But Ella Fitzgerald, in my very humble opinion, was the best singer in the history of American popular music.
****
TheCharleycat (2 months ago)  hmmm....i think its a tie between ella fitzgerald and billie holiday. so many greats have covered this - dinah washington, judy garland frank sinatra etc but i have to say billie holiday's soul suits this song perfectly considering her background
****
slownoman (2 months ago)  For phrasing, Billie Holiday was, and is, supreme. Her life story was tragic; maybe it was a price she had to pay. I hope not. A list of greats is too long for this format, but gotta put Sarah Vaughn in there, too. Midnight Sun I still recall from my childhood (a long time ago). My mom was a big band singer
****
slownoman (2 months ago) Once Lena sang this song, it was hers. I doubt that anyone who's seen this over the last 66 years associates Stormy Weather with anyone else. Like Aretha and "Respect", once she sang it, it stayed sung. This is no disrepect to the other great vocalists who've done it. But, like Otis Redding said when he heard Aretha do his song "that girl done took my song". And she did.

zodiolestes (2 months ago) Why does everyone here keep comparing Movie star Lena Horne with common singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters, and the like?! I wish you guys would stop doing this! Joseqhine Baker Nina Mae McKinney, and Hazel Scott are more in Lenas League!

****
CountessKarma (2 months ago)  @zodiolestes well.... Horne herself has stated that between the two of them, Fitzgerald was the better singer. She didn't let her inner turmoil overshadow her work, which is why Fitzgerald always topped the chart, and Horne barely found her way to it. Further, Lena Horne said she couldn't "sing worth a damn" back then - she was just there for her looks, and so MGM could say "Hey! We have a black star - aren't we progressive."

****
gregwi562 (2 months ago)  Really it isn't fair to compare Ella Fitzgerald to anyone. Her title of being "The First Lady of Song" was no idle title. Her vocal range was out of this world and I can't think of a singer during her time or since who could match her vocal talent.
Lena Horne was not a bad singer at all and she held her own. But I wouldn't dare compare her to Ella.
****
saved2play (2 months ago) Comparisons are so pathetic. Horne and Fitzgerald are both great, what's the point of debating? For some pointless ranked chart?
Get out of the judging, linear mindset and realize these special voices and people are each in an individual class of their own.
****
BabyNnef (1 month ago) Lena Horne had A BEAUTIFUL voice and NOTHING YOU SAY, DO, OR COMPARE HER TO is going to change that! Ella Fitzgerald was a wonderful singer, yes, gorgeous, beautiful voice. So was Billie Holiday! and many others out at the time! Lena Horne was different than they were, as they were all different from one another. But to say that she cant sing and that she got there because of her looks is pretty much shoving her in the same category as J.Lo or Pebbles. What??? She really can sing!
****
illlcrazymethod (1 month ago) very well put

****
zodiolestes (1 month ago) ... And for those of you who imply that Mz. Horne doesnt have SOUL?? Just listen to Lena sing* If You Believe In Yourself?, as Glenda, in* The Wiz,1978. Its like goin to 11 o clock service on sunday mornin in a Southern Baptist or Pentacostal Church!!!

kajohns64 (1 year ago) Lena Horne was one of the great singers of all time. This was her signature song, which she always performed flawlessly. anyone who can watch this video and listen to her sing and only question her race are idiots.
****
joomuck (1 year ago) Stormy weather, as sung by Lena Horne,is one of the great classics. In the very early sixties, my roomate directed me to the television where she was singing s w and, for me, it was the beginning of a lifetine romance. Judy Garland was a great singer but she was no L. H.

****
MangoDaVille (1 year ago)  Once in a lifetime talent results in utter magic combined with a dazzling song, a stellar melody, a fiery imagination and a gifted choreographer. Man, dig those crazy zoot suits. I have attached my humble video of Stormy Weather. Thanks for this great piece of history. Johnny Pal

SEFYH (1 year ago)  That lead female dancer in this piece is the legendary Katherine Dunham of East St. Louis, IL. - Just a little something for all the black history buffs out there.

****
masnip (1 year ago) Thank you for posting this. One of the great standards performed by a wonderful singer and a great lady.
It just doesn't get better than this.

****
luvsmovies79 (1 year ago)  With the awesome Katherine Dunham and her dancers! You can't beat that!

****

bmkfan (1 year ago) Lena Horne AND Katherine Dunham?? Simply stunning. Love it!

****

fromthesidelines (1 year ago) Keep in mind that the song was originally written for Ethel Waters to sing in the 1933 edition of the "Cotton Club Parade"- and that made her AND the song inseparable from each other, until Lena appeared with her distinct version on film, 10 years later...

****

Tigerlily21 (1 year ago) I love Lena Horne but my favorite is by Judy Garland, she gave me goosebumps.
****
Aaimah (1 year ago) I don't know why people like to pit two signers together. Just enjoy it you're not honoring either signer by getting in childish arguments over who's better.

****

LadiiCapricorn (1 year ago)  Lena Horne is so beautiful and classy she and Dorothy Dandridge are my favorites

jjj1951 (1 year ago) She wanted to the movie version of Showboat but Hollywood wasn't ready to cast a black for the role at the time. Too bad for us because it would have been a film treasure.

ErsatzWino (1 year ago) Gah! I haven't seen the full dance number in YEARS. I keep hoping one day it'll pop up. This was the first time in nearly a decade I'd seen any of it at all, so I thank you for that much.
****
novusmundi (11 months ago) I got lucky. About 7 or 8 years ago on AMC they played this movie for Black History Month in February. I had never seen it but I heard who was in it so I recorded it. It had Bill Robinson, Lene, Fats Waller, Katheryn Durnham Dance Troupe, Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers. I need to transfer it to dvd before my video tape wears out. Great film. Watch it if you can.

****

nunyobiz6 (11 months ago) I like Lena's version but I just listened to Dinah Washington sing this and she rocks.IDK I just think Lena was being more mainstreem and dare I say whitewashed with her version.where's the soul?No disrespect intended but I think back then black singers were told to try to fit in with the whites so that they could be more commercial.
****
acotw67 (11 months ago) nunyobiz6:
Perhaps the best explanation for the difference between Lena Horne's and Dinah Washington 's versions is simply one of style and vocal pitch. Lena was a cabaret singer with a soprano voice; Dinah started as a blues singer/shouter. (Baby, Get Lost and Long John are her masterpieces, imho.) Also, I don't think Harold Arlen ballads were meant to have soul. His songs were classified as torch songs. Lena sings Cole Porter really well, too. Love this film & song.

****
cocoa510pricess (11 months ago) what is the name of this movie

****
vulumpuous (11 months ago) the name of the movie is called Stormy Weather.
****
branchwater7 (11 months ago) song originally introduced in a production number at the cotton club in harlem featuring none other than the inimitable ethel waters and the immortal duke ellington and his orchestra.
****
KacanuHa (11 months ago) great version, but not even close to Ella and Joe Pass...search their version for a classy performance
****
fozmubi (11 months ago) No way! Lena OWNS this song!
Ella, Dinah etc have great voices and can outdo Lena with other songs, but "Stormy Weather" is perfect for Lena's vocal style. Her smooth elegant intonation works the song's quiet melancholy to its perfect dramatic effect.
Lena rules!
****
MissDellaReese (10 months ago) I actually agree with you on that. This is the definitive version of Stormy Weather. Lena Horne.
****
sierria64 (10 months ago) oprah is producing a movie about lena horne ... love to see it. read her utobiorgraphy and she really had to deal with blantent racism. imagine white movie producers wanting you to say that you are white - when you are black ,imagine.. having to wear dark color makeup because you look too white on film next to a black man. In those days black men could not stand next to a white women ... and her shots were always cut when the films went down south
she paved the way for halle and the rest
****
harrietcraig2 (10 months ago) This is the ultimate version that we remember, but I thought the amazing Miss Horne returns in the clip after the Katherine Dunham dance piece, for a reprise, and shuts the window. The lady in the loudest dress, is meant to be a street walker, right? I have seen this type of 'stylized' clothing in many 40's films worn by actors of color, and have even seen Betty Grable and Joan Crawford caricaturizing it in musicals. Is it loosely based on real clothing that actually existed?

missevegee (9 months ago) what her origin?...she looks really light skinned but i guess she is mixed or sometthin..anybody kno??
****
lboogie188 (9 months ago) i believe she mixed, but i know she just considered herself a black woman
****
dawnye1 (8 months ago) I dont know if anyone had answer your question but her u go.
Lena Horne was born in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York. Both sides of her family are mixture of African American, Native American, and Caucasian descent. Both were part of what W.E.B. DuBois called "the talented tenth," the upper stratum of middle-class, well-educated African Americans. She grew up in an upper middle class black community.
In other word she's black. Most black american claim the exsact racial background. :)

****
StevesWifeCharlo (9 months ago) No one to compare to the beauty and poise today, except perhaps Halle Berry. But, Miss Lena has a story to tell and all of these girl singers today need to heed her advice and glean from a Woman of substance and true talent. She was groomed in the MGM school and they didn't play. Judy Garland, and others were brought up in that system. It shows the polish and the poise, and the musicality. Watch and learn people!

****
yourfriendphinex (9 months ago) none of todays singers, male or female no matter how good they may be, compare to singers of musics glory days, i'd up until the 60's maybe part way through the 70's. there's too much studio fabrication today so how could you even tell who can sing and who cant
****
Fallansig (9 months ago) None? That's a tad absolute. There are many talented singers today which are as good, if not better, than this singer.
They are just a bit ignored.

****
bluesjaye (9 months ago) Hi Folks, Great video from a great movie. Netflix has it. Mr. Bojangles, Bill Robinson is her dancing love intrest. Cab Calloway,[Think the guy in the white suit in the Blues Brothers] Dooley Wilson, [think "Play it Sam, play 'As time goes By' from 'Casablanca] Fats Waller and a bunch of 1943 WWII black entertainers make this a great musical. Rent It !!! Jay Edwards

****
ccaammiiittoo1 (8 months ago) You're in for a treat. The Katharine Dunham Dance Troupe was one of the hottest dance groups of the time. There was almost no world leader who didn't welcome the sight of Dunham.

norwooel (8 months ago) not sad enough
****
norwooel (8 months ago) sorry, guys, but its true... there are versions of this song that are so beautifully melancholy they make you want to cry, this isnt one of them. it should be sad, listen to the song
****
ccaammiiittoo1 (8 months ago) I first saw her in 1943 in segregated Douglas, AZ, at the Lyric Theatre. It was such an awesome  experience that I remember to this day. Needless to say, I've remained a devoted fan ever since. By the way, I saw at the Coconut Grove in the 60s. Funny, gangster Mickey Cohen had a seat directly in front of her!

****
tabijoux (7 months ago) As much as I love Lena Horne, she was NOT the original singer of this song. It was Ethel Waters (the famed Broadway actress and born again Christian groupie of Bily Graham). She sang this song first but it was Lena that made it popular! Either way, both artists made the song beautiful!!

****
VAUGHN1943 (7 months ago) Happy 92 birthday Lena !!!!!!!!! 6/30/1917 Love you always and wish you the best .

****
dudedad629 (7 months ago) The end of the movie has the Nicholas Brothers dance sequence where they literally fly down the stairs doing splits and to say that it's awesome doesn't do it justice. Though some of the movie plays on minstrel stereotypes, it's really good and of course, the talent of the performers is second to none.

****
musthavejava (6 months ago) Many thanks for sharing this segment of the movie! Lena was and will always be magnificent. She was a true pioneer who helped open so many doors of the entertainment industry to African-Americans. She is owed a huge debt; honoring her fondly is but one way to pay her back for her stellar contributions. I love you, Lena! Thanks and God bless you!

****
tremeluzir (6 months ago) Just amazing! How I wish to see it all... Thanx!
