Lena Horne - Stormy Weather (1943)
Posted by MarkusRTK
January 27, 2008
"Here's the full version of a performance that can be found truncated elsewhere on YouTube -- from the 1943 film of the same name, the great Lena Horne delivers a sizzling performance of her signature song. (I wish I had the full dance that follows it, which includes some amazing ballet. If anyone has a full-length version, please post it or get in touch with me!) "

dback1221 (5 months ago) Last I heard, Alicia Keys is on the short list to play Horne. I think she'd do well handling the vocals, but lip-synching to Horne for integrity's sake would work, too. Jackson is a remarkable talent performer-wise, but Horne is a goddess; I think Keys is a better physical match. No diss on Janet's talent (plentiful), nor Keys (amazing), but anyone who wants to play Horne--one of the most beautiful women, let alone black women, EVER--and a brilliant jazz artist has gotta bring the goods!
gulfgypsy (5 months ago) Lena had it all: Beautiful, one of a kind voice and class.

slownoman (2 months ago) Charley, don't get me wrong. Lena was a great singer, and this was her transformative number. But Ella Fitzgerald, in my very humble opinion, was the best singer in the history of American popular music.

CountessKarma (2 months ago) @zodiolestes well.... Horne herself has stated that between the two of them, Fitzgerald was the better singer. She didn't let her inner turmoil overshadow her work, which is why Fitzgerald always topped the chart, and Horne barely found her way to it. Further, Lena Horne said she couldn't "sing worth a damn" back then - she was just there for her looks, and so MGM could say "Hey! We have a black star - aren't we progressive."
gregwi562 (2 months ago) Really it isn't fair to compare Ella Fitzgerald to anyone. Her title of being "The First Lady of Song" was no idle title. Her vocal range was out of this world and I can't think of a singer during her time or since who could match her vocal talent.

MangoDaVille (1 year ago) Once in a lifetime talent results in utter magic combined with a dazzling song, a stellar melody, a fiery imagination and a gifted choreographer. Man, dig those crazy zoot suits. I have attached my humble video of Stormy Weather. Thanks for this great piece of history. Johnny Pal

SEFYH (1 year ago) That lead female dancer in this piece is the legendary Katherine Dunham of East St. Louis, IL. - Just a little something for all the black history buffs out there.

jjj1951 (1 year ago) She wanted to the movie version of Showboat but Hollywood wasn't ready to cast a black for the role at the time. Too bad for us because it would have been a film treasure.
ARochelleC05 (1 year ago) Thank you so much for posting this! I absolutely love this song and I've always idolized Lena Horne. Thanks!

novusmundi (11 months ago) I got lucky. About 7 or 8 years ago on AMC they played this movie for Black History Month in February. I had never seen it but I heard who was in it so I recorded it. It had Bill Robinson, Lene, Fats Waller, Katheryn Durnham Dance Troupe, Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers. I need to transfer it to dvd before my video tape wears out. Great film. Watch it if you can.

StevesWifeCharlo (9 months ago) No one to compare to the beauty and poise today, except perhaps Halle Berry. But, Miss Lena has a story to tell and all of these girl singers today need to heed her advice and glean from a Woman of substance and true talent. She was groomed in the MGM school and they didn't play. Judy Garland, and others were brought up in that system. It shows the polish and the poise, and the musicality. Watch and learn people!

bluesjaye (9 months ago) Hi Folks, Great video from a great movie. Netflix has it. Mr. Bojangles, Bill Robinson is her dancing love intrest. Cab Calloway,[Think the guy in the white suit in the Blues Brothers] Dooley Wilson, [think "Play it Sam, play 'As time goes By' from 'Casablanca] Fats Waller and a bunch of 1943 WWII black entertainers make this a great musical. Rent It !!! Jay Edwards

norwooel (8 months ago) sorry, guys, but its true... there are versions of this song that are so beautifully melancholy they make you want to cry, this isnt one of them. it should be sad, listen to the song
ccaammiiittoo1 (8 months ago) I first saw her in 1943 in segregated Douglas, AZ, at the Lyric Theatre. It was such an awesome experience that I remember to this day. Needless to say, I've remained a devoted fan ever since. By the way, I saw at the Coconut Grove in the 60s. Funny, gangster Mickey Cohen had a seat directly in front of her!

tabijoux (7 months ago) As much as I love Lena Horne, she was NOT the original singer of this song. It was Ethel Waters (the famed Broadway actress and born again Christian groupie of Bily Graham). She sang this song first but it was Lena that made it popular! Either way, both artists made the song beautiful!!

VAUGHN1943 (7 months ago) Happy 92 birthday Lena !!!!!!!!! 6/30/1917 Love you always and wish you the best .

dudedad629 (7 months ago) The end of the movie has the Nicholas Brothers dance sequence where they literally fly down the stairs doing splits and to say that it's awesome doesn't do it justice. Though some of the movie plays on minstrel stereotypes, it's really good and of course, the talent of the performers is second to none.
musthavejava (6 months ago) Many thanks for sharing this segment of the movie! Lena was and will always be magnificent. She was a true pioneer who helped open so many doors of the entertainment industry to African-Americans. She is owed a huge debt; honoring her fondly is but one way to pay her back for her stellar contributions. I love you, Lena! Thanks and God bless you!
