R&B AND HIP-HOP DANCES
The purpose of this page is to showcase selected videos of various Black originated R&B/Hip-Hop dances that were first introduced in the mid 1970s through 2011.
Most of these dance video showcase African American dancers. However, because R&N and Hip-Hop music & dance are found the world over, some of these videos also showcase non-Black dancers.
This page also includes dances such as The Butterffly that originally came from Caribbean sources such as dancehall reggae music but are or were commonly used for R&B/Hip-Hop songs.
These videos are posted for their historical, folkloric, educational, .aesthetic, and/or entertainment values.
This compilation is not meant to be a complete listing of post 1970s African American originated R&B/Hip-Hop dances..
For selected videos of 1960s-1970s African American originated social dances and African American hand dances such as the Philly Bop and Chicago Stepping, click http://www.jambalayah.com/node/1142
Also, click http://www.jambalayah.com/node/10 for a listing of other videos of African American dances.
Sources Of The Videos
All of the videos on this page are from http://www.youtube.com/
Other videos of these dances, of other African American originated R&B/Hip-Hop dances, and of other social dances that were originated by non-African American people can be found by perusing the YouTube pages for these featured videos.
Please note that links to YouTube videos or to other online resources may not remain viable. Also, please be aware that comments posted on YouTube viewer comments threads may not be suitable for children or otherwise may not meet the standards of Cocojams.com

SELECTED EXAMPLES OF R&B AND HIP-HOP DANCES (Single Dances)
(Posted in alphabetical order by the dance name)
A, B
"The Aunt Jackie" and "Chicken Noddle Soup"
Uploaded by F0XxDyye on Jul 13, 2007
Chris Brown does Jason Fox's Aunt Jackie!
-snip-
Editor: There are other YouTube examples of the Aunt Jackie, but the song contains the "n" word and for that reason I'm not showcasing them on this page.
A dance custom that continues to be found in African and African Diaspora dances from waaay back and now is when people encourage dancers and praise their dance moves with shouts like "Go Chirs!" that is heard in this video.

Soulja Boy Tell'em - Bird Walk
Uploaded by SouljaBoyTellemVEVO on Oct 4, 2009
Music video by Soulja Boy Tell`em performing Bird Walk. (C) 2008 ColliPark Music/Interscope Records
Editor:
There have been numerous African American bird dances from the 18th century to now. Here's a list of African American bird dances that I can think of: "The Buzzard Lope", "The Buck & Wing", "The Pigeon Wing", "The Turkey Trot", "Buzzard", "The Bird". "The Eagle Rock", "The Chicken", "The Funky Chicken", "The Penguin", "Shake A Tail Feather", and "The Bird Walk". "The Fly" and "Chicken Noodle Soup" could also be added to that list. Did I forget any African American bird dance?

How to Dance to Reggae Dancehall : How to Do the Butterfly in Reggae Dancehall
uploaded by expertvillage on Jan 18, 2008
Learn how to do the butterfly in dancing to reggae dancehall music with expert advice on dance moves and skills in this free dance lesson video.
Expert: Safi A. Thomas

Bio: Safi A.
Filmmaker: Paul Muller
Editor:
A number of children's cheers and rhymes include the line "we gonna do the butterfly". But most of the videos that I've seen of those cheers and rhymes just feature a arms crossed above the chest with hands fluttering mimicking motion while chanting "do the butterfly".
This is the actual dance, and, as indicated in this video, it comes from the dancehall Reggae music in the Caribbean. A sound file of soca great Bryon Lee's instructional song Soca Butterfly can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGtpaJ4Allw&feature=related I'm unsure if this record started that dance craze or if it just capitalized on it.
