Video Description:
Here is a excerpt from the Wikipedia page for Black Orpheus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orpheus :
"Two children, Benedito and Zeca, follow Orpheus around throughout the film. They believe Orpheus's story that his guitar playing causes the sun to rise in the morning. After Orpheus's death, Benedito insists that Zeca pick up the guitar and play so that the sun will rise. Zeca plays, and the sun does rise. A little girl comes by, gives Zeca a single flower and the film ends with the three of them dancing".

Click on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orpheus to read the plot of Black Orpheus.
Here is some information about The Greek characters Orpheus and Eurydice:

"The Greeks of the Classical age venerated the legendary figure of Orpheus as chief among poets and musicians, and the perfector of the lyre invented by Hermes. Poets like Simonides of Ceos said that, with his music and singing, he could charm birds, fish and wild beasts, coax the trees and rocks into dance,[7] and even divert the course of rivers. He was one of the handful of Greek heroes[8] to visit the Underworld and return; even in Hades his song and lyre did not lose their power...

The most famous story in which Orpheus figures is that of his wife Eurydice (also known as Agriope). While fleeing from Aristaeus (son of Apollo), Eurydice ran into a nest of snakes which bit her fatally on her heel. Distraught, Orpheus played such sad songs and sang so mournfully that all the nymphs and gods wept. On their advice, Orpheus traveled to the underworld and by his music softened the hearts of Hades and Persephone (he was the only person ever to do so), who agreed to allow Eurydice to return with him to earth on one condition: he should walk in front of her and not look back until they both had reached the upper world. He set off with Eurydice following and in his anxiety as soon as he reached the upper world he turned to look at her, forgetting that both needed to be in the upper world, and she vanished for the second time, but now forever. The story in this form belongs to the time of Virgil, who first introduces the name of Aristaeus and the tragic outcome”…

Mi favorite movie...... Beautiful!
****
796824 (1 year ago) A superb film that surpasses any of Hollywood's film today.
****
studyreligions (1 year ago) why cant life be this simple...

****

aypianoman (1 year ago) This simple? Nothing is ever as simple as it seems. I mean, at this point in the film, Zeca (the one playing guitar) just took the guitar of Orpheus, someone he admired, who just died tragically falling off a cliff...and now that he has the guitar, he has the responsibility to play it in order to make the sun rise...

So in the sense that it's simple on the surface but really quite complicated, life IS that simple!

But what a great movie...

****
aypianoman (1 year ago) Yeah. It is a truly beautiful sequence...and it is a beautiful movie. You should watch it! (Not to mention great music...)

****
pitchick5 (1 year ago) How lovely life is when seen through the eyes of children...when I was a kid, my mom told me that butterflies were faries and they danced on the flowers because spring was coming. I think of my spring faries every time I see this part of the movie.
****
crazycoolone (1 year ago) This was one of my FAVORITE parts of the film. It portrayed a light of hope at the end of this GREAT film! The kids are so cute and so talented & soulful!
****
gloritl (1 year ago) wow...Portuguese is so beautiful
and this is one of my favorite movies :)

****
bigbenhillman07 (1 year ago) does anyone know the name of this melody that they are singing/playing here? I know its one that I have heard on many jazz and samba records, but the name eludes me.

****

bigbenhillman07 (1 year ago) ah! "Samba De Orfeo"
I answered my own question. :)
****
SkylineFilm (1 year ago) Doesn't this just open your soul?

Battovim (1 year ago)  so beautiful. makes you want to cry
****
MPSShanahan (1 year ago) By itself this scene can seem too sweet. But in the film it immediately follows the death of Orfeu, Euridice in his arms. This moment of hope in the wake of tragedy, with its sense of an ancient tradition being carried forward by the children, is one of the most bittersweet endings in all of cinema. It is, to me, a much more satisfactory ending than most other retellings of the Orpheus myth (while several great operas tell this story, for example, none of them have particularly good endings).

****
daliaz65 (1 year ago) [in response to a deleted comment written by ng2513]  Sorry, but this movie is over 40 years old and the legend of Orfeu and Euridice is probably over 2500 years old. If somebody told you the ship sinks at the end of Titanic, would you cry, "spoiler!"?

Go see the movie. They didn't ruin it for you, trust me. It is one of the most beautiful movies ever made and thank you to the person who posted this clip, one of the most beautiful and touching scenes ever filmed.

****

ng2513 (1 year ago) The age of the movie is irrelevant, and I only vaguely knew the subject of the movie. The reason I was interested in it was the soundtrack. I'm a young guy, and I'm not familiar with the vast majority of 40 year old films. It's not like this is a wildly popular film based on a wildly popular legend. Both are pretty obscure (despite the Oscar), and I really didn't expect people to give away major parts of the plot.

****

vikulya78 (1 year ago) Excuse me? Were you serious when you were writing this? Do you really mean you do not know about the legend of Orpheus and Euridice? My god, man, where do you come from?!

****

ng2513 (1 year ago) I'm sorry, I'm not an expert in Greek mythology. But I'm sure you're very cultured *not*. BTW, I live in America. Maybe Americans aren't as well versed in Greek mythology as people from other countries. I focused on biology while I was in school, not myths.

I'm sure that I know the endings of famous movies that you have not yet seen. I'm also sure that I know some stories that you don't. Do you mind if I give them away to you?

****
vikulya78 (1 year ago)  No, I don't mind at all. In fact, I can even enjoy a movie even if I am aware of the plot, hehe :)

I am not an expert in Greek mythology either. It's just a very famous story.

****
ng2513 (1 year ago) I'm not saying all Americans aren't aware of the myth; just that if you're very young and you're not aware of relatively obscure myths such as this, then it is a spoiler.

LOL, I do read, it's just that this IS somewhat obscure, despite what the fans seem to think.

****

MPSShanahan (1 year ago) While your comments are more than a little rough around the edges, I'm happy that the amazing music of this film still draws you and others to 'Black Orpheus.' As with most myths, the real issue is not how it ends, but how the story takes you there.
****
MPSShanahan (10 months ago)  I'm happy that younger folks like you are drawn to this amazing flick by its music - while I had assumed that everyone knows this story, this is a good reminder that the story is fresh and new to many people, here in the US and elsewhere. I personally have spent 30 years working on Brazilian music on solo guitar, inspired by seeing this film on an old black and white TV in my college days, and am thrilled that the music still draws people to this movie.

Here's wishing YOU a HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

theycallmedrworm (1 year ago)  I had no idea they had both passed away. Black Orpheus is one of my favorites. I will never tire of watching it. The story is so powerful and moving. And this clip is so wonderful, the children continue the tradition of playing music and dancing.

****
Juliaflo (1 year ago) Tragically, the beautiful Marpessa Dawn passed away this past August, roughly 40 days after Breno Mello.

May they BOTH rest in peace.

CaptainSoloer (1 year ago) I love this movie! I always liked this scene the best, and seeing it again brings back such fond memories... Lovely.
****
onwyler (1 year ago) For sure one of the best movies ever made: singing and dancing, love and death.
One one level it's just a boy-meets-girl story; on another level it's a work of art about the power of music.

****
MIKESOWELL (1 year ago)  How sad it is they both pass away within 41 days of each other, victims of Heart Disease. Turner Classic Movies pay tribute to them in their video of persons in the Entertainment Industry that died in 2008. Breno Mello 1931-2008 Marpessa Dawn 1934-2008 Rest in Peace.

mrpescato (1 year ago) ng2513, Orpheus and Euridice is hardly an "obscure" myth. Knowing the ending of the myth adds poignancy to the film. Great film, great ending.

cb108 (3 years ago) Lindissimo! Total joy. Alegria total. Tears of joy. The best scene from one of the greatest movies of all time. If you don't speak Portuguese, the dubbed English version is actually quite good. I've seen Black Orpheus (Orfeo Negro) about 10 times and it keeps getting better and better.

11777766 (2 years ago) What a wonderful moment when the children are convinced that their music causes the sun to rise. Antonio Jobim wrote the film's beautiful score. I love my VCR of Black Orpheus and hope it's out on DVD by now. And Fellini's Nights of Cabiria is so great, too, because it shares this magic of childlike innocence.

tombradley (2 years ago)  Dear robinmorgan144 -
This was the first foreign film I showed my daughters. They were three and four and could not read English and surely didn't know Portuguese. But they wanted see it again and danced through it.
They are almost 30 now. Life goes on.
Now I feel like crying.

charles6735 (2 years ago)  Years ago Bravo network used to show movies and it showed this one in a dubbed version and I have never seen that version since

****

garota789 (2 years ago) Yep, that's how I first learned of this movie. When Bravo was a true arts channel and not just a dumping ground for NBC shows. I really miss that channel I learned a lot.
****
