Black Orpheus Movie in Rio
Posted by jocass
September 08, 2006
Video Description:
Here is a excerpt from the Wikipedia page for Black Orpheus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orpheus :
"Two children, Benedito and Zeca, follow Orpheus around throughout the film. They believe Orpheus's story that his guitar playing causes the sun to rise in the morning. After Orpheus's death, Benedito insists that Zeca pick up the guitar and play so that the sun will rise. Zeca plays, and the sun does rise. A little girl comes by, gives Zeca a single flower and the film ends with the three of them dancing".

"The Greeks of the Classical age venerated the legendary figure of Orpheus as chief among poets and musicians, and the perfector of the lyre invented by Hermes. Poets like Simonides of Ceos said that, with his music and singing, he could charm birds, fish and wild beasts, coax the trees and rocks into dance,[7] and even divert the course of rivers. He was one of the handful of Greek heroes[8] to visit the Underworld and return; even in Hades his song and lyre did not lose their power...

aypianoman (1 year ago) Yeah. It is a truly beautiful sequence...and it is a beautiful movie. You should watch it! (Not to mention great music...)
pitchick5 (1 year ago) How lovely life is when seen through the eyes of children...when I was a kid, my mom told me that butterflies were faries and they danced on the flowers because spring was coming. I think of my spring faries every time I see this part of the movie.
crazycoolone (1 year ago) This was one of my FAVORITE parts of the film. It portrayed a light of hope at the end of this GREAT film! The kids are so cute and so talented & soulful!
gloritl (1 year ago) wow...Portuguese is so beautiful

bigbenhillman07 (1 year ago) does anyone know the name of this melody that they are singing/playing here? I know its one that I have heard on many jazz and samba records, but the name eludes me.

starfriend (1 year ago) Wow, brilliant..it has left me speechless.
Battovim (1 year ago) so beautiful. makes you want to cry
MPSShanahan (1 year ago) By itself this scene can seem too sweet. But in the film it immediately follows the death of Orfeu, Euridice in his arms. This moment of hope in the wake of tragedy, with its sense of an ancient tradition being carried forward by the children, is one of the most bittersweet endings in all of cinema. It is, to me, a much more satisfactory ending than most other retellings of the Orpheus myth (while several great operas tell this story, for example, none of them have particularly good endings).

daliaz65 (1 year ago) [in response to a deleted comment written by ng2513] Sorry, but this movie is over 40 years old and the legend of Orfeu and Euridice is probably over 2500 years old. If somebody told you the ship sinks at the end of Titanic, would you cry, "spoiler!"?

vikulya78 (1 year ago) Excuse me? Were you serious when you were writing this? Do you really mean you do not know about the legend of Orpheus and Euridice? My god, man, where do you come from?!
****
****
vikulya78 (1 year ago) No, I don't mind at all. In fact, I can even enjoy a movie even if I am aware of the plot, hehe :)

ng2513 (1 year ago) I'm not saying all Americans aren't aware of the myth; just that if you're very young and you're not aware of relatively obscure myths such as this, then it is a spoiler.

MPSShanahan (10 months ago) I'm happy that younger folks like you are drawn to this amazing flick by its music - while I had assumed that everyone knows this story, this is a good reminder that the story is fresh and new to many people, here in the US and elsewhere. I personally have spent 30 years working on Brazilian music on solo guitar, inspired by seeing this film on an old black and white TV in my college days, and am thrilled that the music still draws people to this movie.

Juliaflo (1 year ago) Tragically, the beautiful Marpessa Dawn passed away this past August, roughly 40 days after Breno Mello.

milovy (1 year ago) This is one of those film scenes that stays with you forever

imflyinn (1 year ago) sublime
CaptainSoloer (1 year ago) I love this movie! I always liked this scene the best, and seeing it again brings back such fond memories... Lovely.
onwyler (1 year ago) For sure one of the best movies ever made: singing and dancing, love and death.

MIKESOWELL (1 year ago) How sad it is they both pass away within 41 days of each other, victims of Heart Disease. Turner Classic Movies pay tribute to them in their video of persons in the Entertainment Industry that died in 2008. Breno Mello 1931-2008 Marpessa Dawn 1934-2008 Rest in Peace.
haveajerk (1 year ago) Sun rises even if Orpheus dies. Beautiful lesson.
Callistheneitus (1 year ago) Possibly the best ending to a movie ever.
imflyinn (1 year ago) probably the most beautiful movie I'll ever see
mrpescato (1 year ago) ng2513, Orpheus and Euridice is hardly an "obscure" myth. Knowing the ending of the myth adds poignancy to the film. Great film, great ending.
Nanadsyl (9 months ago) I first saw this film during summer day camp in Chicago in the 60;'s, the part at the end with the children was the best.. It brough a smile to our faces because the ending was pretty dark.
bronZeamaZon (6 months ago) I just watched this film this weekend out of curiosity and fell in love with it. This is my most favorite part seeing that little girl do that dance
billny36 (5 months ago) This is the one movie to see, the one place to experience, and a magical ending. Bonfa's music lives on
trinigurl98 (4 months ago) Great movie. My mother had the entire family look at it. Can anyone tell me if there is an English dubbed version? All I can find is the subtitled version.

Docmananoff (3 years ago) As a kid, I had a crush on the little girl...too bad she's about 20 years older than me.
cb108 (3 years ago) Lindissimo! Total joy. Alegria total. Tears of joy. The best scene from one of the greatest movies of all time. If you don't speak Portuguese, the dubbed English version is actually quite good. I've seen Black Orpheus (Orfeo Negro) about 10 times and it keeps getting better and better.

jreemer (2 years ago) it would make my day if you can post orfeo singing "manha de carnaval" to eurudice

11777766 (2 years ago) What a wonderful moment when the children are convinced that their music causes the sun to rise. Antonio Jobim wrote the film's beautiful score. I love my VCR of Black Orpheus and hope it's out on DVD by now. And Fellini's Nights of Cabiria is so great, too, because it shares this magic of childlike innocence.
