balletamie (2 years ago) I met her in a resturant in BA arg, in 1995. She was dressed like a big star, the hair done so extraordinary high and a kind of red, long niles, big smile all the time. Full of life I may say, remember her this way. Best for you!

shaspassren (2 years ago) How old is this video? was it in the 50s or 60s?

****

ivansanchez98 (2 years ago) The 1950's. she left right after the revolution and did not want anything to do with the Castro Regime.
****
shaspassren (2 years ago) Wow so this was when she lived in cuba. its sad that she never got to go back to cuba.

emailnuevo (2 years ago) This is, in my opinion, one of the most perfect songs to come out of Cuba (against "Como Fue," "Veinte Anos," and "Que Bueno Baila Usted"). One of my most played songs.
****

marapasa (1 year ago) AZUCAR!!!!!! and sugar too, we miss you Celia....

[“Azucar” means “sugar” This was Celia Cruz’s signature call, spoken by her and by her fans during her songs, probably because the music was so sweet.]

cidedwards31a (1 year ago) Is this the Sonora Mantecara playing behind her ?
****
watupdog99 (1 year ago) Its called La Sonora Matanzera With a "Z"

****

RodriguezVacas (1 year ago) no Z becomes C it is la Sonora Matancera , you can use that way ... Matanzas turned into an adj. in spanish i believe can be used with C and that still keeps the ssssaaaa sound
so it can be described as a matancera/o...thats what i think...

east215 (1 year ago) Did you notice that the audience was all white and the singers were black or mulato? She could prorbably perform there , but probably had ti have her dinner in the kitchen. Cuba was very segregated at that time, but subtle.

lego12356 (1 year ago) MAN THATS OLD!
****

aries7415 (1 year ago) Incredible, I have a autographed picture dated July 16, 1959 with Celia Cruz wearing that same dress with her hair in a pony tail like this video clip. She was the great!
****
east215 (1 year ago) This is her in Cuba. Notice the performers are mostly black or mulato? The audience is all white. Cuba was no paradise for "gente de color" (people of color).
****
aln2012 (1 year ago) WRONG YEAR - This is not in 1960, Movie called: Ole Cuba, 1957 Pototo & Filomeno. The audience might not be black, but Celia, admired black singer is.
****
DD2221983 (1 year ago) good point! alguien sabe por que?
****
Nicklicious (1 year ago) They say that the majority of the population in Cuba is Black/Mulatto, yet, I don't see many Black Cubans in Miami. hmmm.
****

harriet1954 (10 months ago) Love Celia Cruz! Her dresses - just to die for! I LOVE Sonora Matancera!!! I don't know a lot of Spanish at all, but I do listen to a lot of Cumbia. I notice on many of the old Cumbia tracks that the word "negro" is used A LOT! And I know it's not in an insulting way. As I said, if I knew more Spanish...

****

guido5635 (10 months ago) Negro simply means black and it it is usually used in a loving way you do not call some one negro or negrito if you do not like them it is the complete oposite of English
****
erscott13 (10 months ago) I've been looking for this for years, ever since I moved and lost my recording.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

wpeacock4257 (8 months ago) You will always be missed Celia!!

anaelena65 (8 months ago) oppera1983 Celia was a great Cuban singer however to say how wonderful she was & trash Estefan because you feel she is anti Castro is pretty funny! Celia also left Cuba because of Fidel Castro. In fact when her mom became ill she wasn't able to go back to see her. Often when she sang "Cuando Sali de Cuba" she would have the line in there I left my mother I left my love. She like many Cubans never stopped loving her country but refused to live under the Castro oppresion.

Borg74 (3 months ago) Celia in all her glory! She was young, unique, talented and with a contagious energy. and she was in her beloved Cuba.
