"Kaya, real name Joseph Reginald Topize, is an African singer from Mauritius and the creator of Seggae, a fusion of Sega and reggae, two of the most popular music genres in Mauritius. Born in Roche-Bois on 10 August 1960, he campaigned for rights of the Mauritian Creole people. At the height of his career in 1999 he was found dead in a prison cell on 21 February 1999, aged 38 . Riots followed soon after causing one of the major social upheavals in Mauritius "
