Video Description:
Chuck Berry performs "Johnny B Goode" A number of posters to this video's comment thread indicated that this video is NOT from 1958 but from the early 1960s. A couple of posters indicated that it was from a Belgium televison show in 1963 or 1964.

Spyflugan91 (1 month ago) Seen the movie Cadillac Records where Mos Def plays Chuck Berry? He is awesome!
****
InfinityNebula (1 month ago) Mos Def was incredible as Berry in 'Cadillac Records' its amazing how much he resembled Chuuck Berry however the guy that played Muddy Waters did not look enough like Waters to pull it off
The actor that played Little Walter was impressive although he didnt look like Little Walter either
Overall the film was one of the best of the year very entertaining!
****
Trey979 (1 month ago) Growing up i thought i white guy song this song its crazy i didnt even know what he looked like
****
SeaCadet263 (1 month ago) Apparently, the title of the video is incorrect.
****
tidepoolbay (1 month ago) That can not be 1958.
Gibson ES-335's did not have block inlays until the early 1960's 1963 I belive.
****
widdyhabb (1 month ago) I know nothing abouit Gibson guitars, but you're right: this can't be '58. Chuck looks to old, the women in the audience wear knee-long dresses... no, I'd say '62, '63 or maybe '64.

****
ITILII (4 weeks ago) @bompy84 Robert Johnson is the grandfather, Chuck Berry the father, and Elvis Presley the king of rock and roll
****
Pala16123z0r (3 weeks ago) Elvis Presley is so far from being king of Rock n Roll... ROCK n ROLL involves using a guitar!... Elvis just stood there in goofy clothes and sang, not that it was bad, he was alright. But Chuck is truly the one and only King of Rock n Roll!
****
PatrickEatZombie (3 weeks ago) Classic
****
Dora9171 (3 weeks ago) Elvis Presley sings much better, his voice is tremendous amazing. Many ppl covered this song because the King of Rock n Roll Elvis Presley did the cover of this song and it's probably one of the reasons...xD Elvis is the King as always..you cant change it!!!xD
****
araenae (3 weeks ago) @Dora9171
Yes, his voice was amazing, but you gotta keep in mind Elvis was mainly a singer, while Chuck was a songwriter, he basically laid the foundations of every single modern rock act. Would've Chuck been born white, he would probably much more acclaimed than Elvis himself
****
bibhuna (3 weeks ago) Too true
****
rbound827 (3 weeks ago) @araenae - Chuck Berry didnt write the tempo or licks that he used in many of his songs. They were taken, some note for not, from Louis Jordan. But Berry was ( and is) a great songwriter, who tapped into the teenage market with his lyrics-even if he was far from being a teenager himself.
****
Dora9171 (3 weeks ago) it was Elvis who made rock 'n' roll the international language of pop. Presley sang both hard driving rockabilly, rock and roll dance songs and ballads, laying a commercial foundation upon which other rock musicians would build their careers.Singers like Jerry Lee Lewis, the Everly Brothers, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and others immediately followed in his wake. John Lennon later observed, "Before Elvis, there was nothing."
****
ensconse (3 weeks ago) Don't dig some of the above comments, but let's all dig Mr. R & R.
By the way, more likely this performance is from 1965.

bkhaskins123 (2 weeks ago) Chuck Berry is a great musician who influenced the course of American music in the early days od Rock 'n' Roll. PERIOD. Long live Rock 'n' Roll!
****
enferno00 (1 week ago) To think some people believe elvis started rock n roll lol.
****
rbound827 (1 week ago) No one thinks Elvis "started" Rock and Roll-but Elvis combined Country music and Blues to help create Rockabilly- in 1954. ( Bill Haley was doing the same thing in 1952) Both Haley and Presley recorded before Little Richard and Chuck Berry. RnR was an evolution and a hybrid. Berry didnt create it by himself
****
Fromtehinternets (1 week ago) Elvis didn't start rock and roll, that was a dj on the moon dog show, and he just coined the phrase. Elvis did however popularize what would be called rock and roll with the white community.
****
stoneyjewel (1 week ago) 1:53 shows the genial showmanship of the man. What a superstar!
****
PanfiRock (1 week ago) Elvis and Chuck.... Both were great artists, but none of them made this combination, the first was Carl Perkins, the author of the hit Blue Suede Shoes...
Elvis copy to chuck in many things, not to mention that it was very racist to Mexicans, in an interview said " I'd rather kiss a pig than a Mexican girl"
Chuck Berry King Of Rock n Roll
****
rbound827 (1 week ago) @PanfiRock- Presley recorded first, before Berry and Perkins. Perkins went to Sun records because he heard Presley on the radio and realized that he was doing the same type of music.
Bill Haley and his Comets were first, in late 51
****
theoldgraymule (6 days ago) "The Blues Came Down From Memphis" CD 1988. Sam Phillips was recording "Elvis" songs with local black guys long before Elvis wandered into his studio. Arguably, the first rock and roll record pre-dates even Jackie Breston's "Rocket 88" from 1951: see "Boogie Chillun' " John Lee Hooker 1948. IMHO, the first fusing of 4/4 beat and spooky electric guitar around lyrics that foretell the "youth revolution" not to appear in full flower for another ten years.

Musicboy315 (3 months ago) i thought the KING OF ROCK N ROLL was Elvis Presley
****
guitargoddess171 (3 months ago) he wasn't the only one dubbed the king of rock n roll. Chuck Berry(personal fav), Bill Haley, Alan Freed and Fats Domino and Little Richard were also the KINGS of ROCK N ROLL. All these men were around before ELvis was active. They all shaped rock and roll music personally there are all great and inspirational one way or another
****
rbound827 (3 months ago) guitargoddess- Im a fan of all the artists you mentioned, but lets get the facts straight. Presley recorded before Chuck Berry. Little Richards first Rock and Roll song wasn't recorded till 55, same for Berry.
****
monkey93222 (3 months ago) Nah he just did covers of songs that the REAL kings of rock made. Hes the one who made rock and roll popular though.
****
rbound827 (3 months ago) He didnt just make covers of other songs- his early recordings combined Blues and Country music, called Rockabilly-later Rock and Roll.
****
somercet1 (3 months ago) Now that's intensity. I love the way he looks.
The great pity of the early greats is that video/film tech was expensive and rare. So much of how we see early RnR is colored by seeing the performers in their older days, when (as almost all artists become) they were almost self parodies. But this is a lovely look at Berry at his peak.

oggiemc83 (2 months ago) have to agree.. this is the guy who started it all off, nobody ever did to the guitar what he did
***
InfinityNebula (2 months ago) Rock N Roll was invented by Black Blues players mostly at Chess
europeans and UK groups emulated Chuck Berry Little Richard Muddy Waters
Howlin Wolf Willie Dixon Little Walter
Fats Domino and Frankie Lymon among many blues players in Chicogo created Rock N Roll
These were the architects
Of course whites copied and stole it!
****
rbound827 (2 months ago) The blues are a different animal than Rock and Roll. Of course the UK groups listened to American blues, but they also were influenced by Rockabilly artists like Carl Perkins-who mixed blues with Country. The Beatles were heavily influenced by Perkins, Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran as well. Of course, it was Bill Haley Chuck Berry and Elvis who were the symbols of Rock and Roll, and its biggest superstars. Nobody "stole" music. It was a natural progression..
****
rbound827 (1 month ago) … Do you think Berry came up with the famous guitar into to this song by himself? Take a listen on You Tube for Louis Jordan's " Aint that Just Like A Woman." Berry took the guitar intro note for note, to prove the point that all artists copy something from artists before them.
****
cal31BRIAN23 (1 month ago) @rbound827 The colored folks been singing it and playing it just like Im doin now, man for more years than I know. They played it like that in the shanties and in their jukee joints, and nobody paid it no mind til I goosed it up. I got it from them. Down in Tupelo, Mississippi, I used to hear old Arthur Crudup bang his box the way I do now, and I said if I ever got to the place where I could feel like old Arthur felt, Id be a music man like nobody ever saw. DIRECT QUOTE FROM ELVIS
****
rbound827 (1 month ago) know all the quote by Elvis. Read the quote carefully. What ELvis was saying was that nobody paid much attention to the original blues versions of these songs until he "goosed" them up. Thats because the Blues weren't for teenagers, they wanted to dance. Elvis does pay tribute to the artists, like Crudup, who he admired-but Presley brought his own style into the mix.
****

MrJackkemp (1 month ago) @ozzy1351 He did invent rock music. The blues did.

MrJackkemp (1 month ago) ok well then Sun House, Sunny boy williams, ect.
****
ozzy1351 (1 month ago) The persons/group you mentioned are BLUES not rock and roll! I agree blues influenced what was to come but in itself isn't rock and roll! There were others before him but nobody made it a mainstream sound that the masses listened to or purchased! The 50's was the true birth of R&R because it was accepted, televised, broadcasted....prior to the 50's it was NEGRO music that wasn't mainstream or accepted!
****
ozzy1351 (1 month ago) According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's website, "While no individual can be said to have invented rock and roll, Chuck Berry comes the closest of any single figure to being the one who put all the essential pieces together."[1] Cub

OnkelMickwald (5 months ago) plz stop this "THIS man invented rock'n'roll"-… (a lot of folks say that about Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino etc.). Chuck contributed alot to what we today define as rock (especially his way of putting the solo guitar in the front), but he didn't INVENT rock'n'roll. NO ONE did, it was evolution and contribution, just like almost everything in music.
****
rbound827 (5 months ago) OnkelMickwald is right. Even Chuck Berry himself says that he didnt "invent "Rock and Roll, but if you want to point to one individual who laid the blueprint, it has to be Chuck Berry. What Berry did was to become its first prolific songwriter and guitarist-taking influences from Country and Blues, suck as Bob Wills and T Bone Walker. He tapped into the teenage market with his songs and gave them a voice. And he's influenced every guitarist since. He is more than a legend.
****
OnkelMickwald (5 months ago) True, but first of all, I think it's pointless pointing out ONE person who laid the blueprint. And besides: Chuck Berry influenced that part of rock'n'roll that later evolved to what we today call "rock" and it's relatives. Other rock'n'roll artists at this time led the evolution in different directions, such as folk-rock, soul, funk etc. That division had already been made at the time Chuck came along.
****
Petebindestrek92 (5 months ago) Chuck is called "the king of rock and roll" or "the godfather of rock and roll". We had others too at the same time, but Chuck Berry did something that has inspired guitarists for over 50 years now. Maybe he did not invented rock and roll since most of it came from country and blues, but maybe he kind of pushed the rock and roll forward from when it was at its start in the evolution and contibution from country and blues. So I think he deserves to be called "The King of Rock and Roll".
****
oblivion292 (5 months ago) Really? Because I think its more accurate to call him the greatest R&B performer.. rhythm and blues was his thing..he only made like 1 or 2 rock songs (if you would even call it rock by today's standards) which was mayballene and Johnny B Goode...but even those songs are mostly blues
****
Petebindestrek92 (5 months ago) It WAS rock and roll if you look at the 50's standards. The rock has changed since then, but anyway, I think Johnny B Goode is a good Rock and Roll-hit. And so is Chuck Berry a rock and roll-artist. But he is also a blues-and-rythm-artist too. But he is most known for Johnny B goode wich is one of the most known rock and roll hits in the world. Then he deserves (again) to be called "The King of Rock and Roll"
****
rbound827 (5 months ago) Berry was most definitely NOT RnB. Chuck Berry was a hybrid of Blues and Country, as much as Elvis Presley was. Chuck Berry listened to the Grand Ole Opry and loved Country artists. His first song "Maybelline" was influenced directly from Bob Wills Country song called "Ida Red" They called Chuck Berry a black hillbilly, and he purposely changed his diction when he sang in order to sound white- he knew it would sell more records and appeal to the white teenagers.
****
OnkelMickwald (5 months ago) I personally is very sceptic towards all those bombastic, yet vague epithets that circulates arond artists from the 50's onwards, as they tend to overexaggerate the role of the artists, and usually lead to mindless idolization.
Chuck Berry did a lot for music, yes, but you don't learn anything about music if you look at ONE artist, or actively search for ONE inventor of any style.
****
bobamis (4 months ago) Show Hide 0 Marked as spam Reply | Spam It is highly unlikely that this video was recorded in 1958. I don't believe Chuck was playing a ES-355 guitar in 1958 (in 1958 he played a ES-350T). Also, Chuck looks older in this video than he did in 1958

TheGurry (4 months ago) I'm starting to agree with my music history professor when he says that the true King of Rock and Roll is this gent right here. ‘
****
rbound827 (4 months ago) Gurry- It all depends on how you classify 'King" Your music professor has a point, but Presley himself never thought of himself as The King, he acknowledged Fats Domino as the King, and maybe rightly so. Presley, especially at the start of his career was just as explosive performer as Chuck, Just listen to his early stuff from 1954/55 at Sun Records. The guy was talented, later on, he did become a parody of himself, but thats America for you. Rock and Roll became a product.
****
TheGurry (4 months ago) absolutely, Elvis' Sun Records material is probably the best of his career and I'm not necessarily knocking him on the whole. I just view Chuck Berry as more of The King since he could write his own songs and write them quite well on top of being an influencial guitar player. I feel like he brought more to the table than Elvis did. Elvis had great charisma but mainly sung songs that were written for him and not by him, and he wasn't as good as Berry on guitar.
****
locustman1 (4 months ago) lol, elvis didn't write any of his songs.
****
rbound827 (4 months ago) Chuck Berry may be in a league of his own, as a musician and songwriter -. But to dismiss Presley as a joke ridiculous.. Presley was a singer. Many great singers from Crosby, Sinatra, Steisand etc weren't songwriters. Elvis sang Country, Rock, Blues, Rockabilly, Dixieland, Gospel and where he was the best- Ballads. He is unmatched. Chuck Berry was not the kind of performer who could pull off "Its Now or Never", or "Love Me Tender." They both have their weakness, and strengths.
****
ledzepfavre4 (4 months ago) just Cuz he doesnt write his own songs doesnt mean hes not good!
Led Zeppelin, Best BAnd ever....

elvis is the king,
Plain and simple
But Chuck is possible the Greatest and most influential guitar player ever.
****
Rockoss (4 months ago) if there was no chuck there would be no elvis.
Led zeppelin got sued for using other peoples songs.
****
rbound827 (4 months ago) Rockoss- Berry went to Chess records almost a year after Elvis. Presely was making a lot of noise during his Sun record tours thru the South. Chess knew of this, and when Chuck went in to record blues music, it was Chess who suggested he try Rock and Roll. Chuck went home and wrote songs purposely aimed at the teenage market. Berry knew Presley was mixing RnB and Country, so he took Bob Wills hit Ida Red, used the melody to write Ida May- renamed Maybelline, It was Elvis who influenced Berry
****
scampoli25 (4 months ago) that is ridiculous
****
rbound827 (4 months ago) Presley had already recorded at Sun in 1954. Berry went to Chess because it was a Blues label. Berry did the same thing as Elvis, mixing Country and Blues, only he did it after Elvis. Berry's influences were also Country artists that he listened to on the Grand Ole Opry. Berry purposely stressed his diction when he sang his songs, because he knew if he sounded "white' his records may cross over easy. In fact many thought that Chuck Berry was white. Berry knew what he was doing.
****
fmichaelb (4 months ago) I read his autobiography maybe 10 years ago. In it he mentions that he once got booked into a 'white only' theater--the promoter (and apparently the audience) honestly didn't know he was black. When he showed up it was like 'Whoa! Who the h. you think you are?' They actually wouldn't let him go on and refunded the tickets.....after much discussion (and threat of suing), they agreed to pay him anyway. If I remember right, he got $2000 (a large sum in those days) to just go away.
****
rbound827 (4 months ago) Yes- Berry sang a mixture of hillbilly and blues, which he grew up listening to-same as Elvis Presley. Chuck purposely stressed his diction on his recordings in order to sound more white, figuring it would get his records played on more radio stations...and he was right
