Yothu Yindi - Treaty (Australia)

Video Description:
from the group's Wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yothu_Yindi:
"Yothu Yindi (Yolngu for "child and mother") are an Australian band with Aboriginal and balanda (non-Aboriginal) members formed in 1986.[1][2][3] Aboriginal members come from Yolngu homelands near Yirrkala on the Gove Peninsula in Northern Territory's Arnhem Land...

The band combines aspects of both musical cultures, their sound varies from traditional Aboriginal songs to modern pop and rock songs, where they blend the typical instruments associated with pop/rock bands, such as guitars and drums, with the traditional yidaki and bilma.[1][2][3] They have adapted traditional Yolngu dance performances to accompany their music, more broadly they promote mutual respect and understanding in the coming together of different cultures.[1][3] Yothu Yindi's most widely known song "Treaty" peaked at #11 on the ARIA singles charts in 1991 and the related album Tribal Voice peaked at #4 on the ARIA albums charts".

Here is an additional comment about the inspiration for the song "Treaty" from this band's Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yothu_Yindi:

"In 1988, as part of Bicentennial celebrations, Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke visited the Northern Territory for the Barunga festival where he was presented with a statement of Aboriginal political objectives by Galarrwuy Yunupingu and Wenten Rubuntja.[7] Hawke responded to the Barunga Statement with a promise that a treaty would be concluded with Indigenous Australians by 1990.[7] By 1991, Yothu Yindi were Hughie Benjamin on drums, Sophie Garrkali and Julie Gungunbuy as dancers, Kellaway, Marika, Mununggurr, Gurrumul Yunupingu, Makuma Yunupingu on yidaki, vocals, bilma, Mandawuy Yunupingu, Mangatjay Yunupingu as a dancer.[1] Mandawuy, with his older brother Galarrwuy, wanted a song to highlight the lack of progress on the treaty between Aboriginal peoples and the federal government. Mandawuy recalls:

Bob Hawke visited the Territory. He went to this gathering in Barunga. And this is where he made a statement that there shall be a treaty between black and white Australia. Sitting around the camp fire, trying to work out a chord to the guitar, and around that camp fire, I said, "Well, I heard it on the radio. And I saw it on the television." That should be a catchphrase. And that's where 'Treaty' was born.[8]"...

angusa13 (1 year ago) Great song, can't believe the goverment hasn't done more for the Aboriginal people. Maybe Rudd will change something.
****
DMillsRN (1 year ago) My soul is saddened by this. Greed and ego have become powerful enemies in our country today. My prayers are that you might stand strong and be a proud people whatever the end result may be for they can take your money, they can take your land but they cannot take the spirit that resides in each one of the beautiful Aborigine people. There is beauty in your smile, joy in your dance and strength in your song. That can never be taken only surrendered. Stand strong!

AkiKisaragi (1 year ago) There seem to be a lot of people posting here that need to look at the issues critically. I grew up in rural Australia and understand where some of these sentiments come from, but appreciate that both sides will disagree because both sides are relying on outdated opinions formed by an earlier generation.

These issues won't be resolved by arguing on youtube which is hardly an authoritative forum. Instead, how about we appreciate this awesome song?

****
Eilthis (1 year ago) A great point you make.

This is an excellent song, I got a little wrapped up in the issues.

****
AkiKisaragi (1 year ago) No harm done, mate =) It's hard not to get wrapped up in the issues sometimes, and can appreciate how frustrating it is when you want to express yourself...but find that the debate online isn't always satisfying. Nice chatting with you =)

gamling55 (1 year ago) Black or white, no one is better than another.
****
PainfullySaid (1 year ago) this is an excellent song, awesome australian talent, coming from our native australians, I wish more of this kind of music would be spread. It's like we're bombarded by other cultures (eg. America) that we forget about our own.

nemesisc02 (1 year ago) Great Aussie song
****
bantiro (1 year ago) i'm studying this song in music. Love the song. this is the first song in Australian history that's sung by an aboriginal band and has made it into the top twenty charts (it stayed there for 22 weeks). it's also the first with Gumatj lyrics. this band must be so proud to be the first aboriginals represented on that scale in the music industry.

****
VK4LA (1 year ago) IM A WHITE FELLA,AND EXCEPT THAT ITS THERE LAND .
us australians feel so bad at how we have treated the aborigines in the past and now...
AND YES IT IS GREAT MUSIC
****
loveDido77 (1 year ago) I agree entirely. It is their land and this song is not just catchy, it makes a valid point.
****
tangaloomababe (1 year ago) A great band, saw them in concert quite a few years ago and what a great night. Brilliant. Have many of their CD's they may be an aboriginal band but they are also one of the best bands we have produced.

****
MickBootMJB1994 (1 year ago) Dude wat does Being an Aboriganal Band have to do with anything? I do agree with you that they one of the finest bands we have produced it does not matter what race the band is, all that matters is the great music they create.

****
MrKevvie (1 year ago) Most Nunga are very proud of who they are so it matters to them!
[Editor: http://www.nma.gov.au/exhibitions/now_showing/first_australians/language... :

“Nunga is a variation of the Western Australian word Nyungar or Nyoongah. It is used by Indigenous people in South Australia.
Nyungar is a word that Western Australia Aboriginal people use to describe themselves. Variation: Nyoongar.”]
****
modelleg (1 year ago) Saw them at Stockton College, New Jersey USA. Everyone was on their feet grooving to this band. Fantastic Show! Wish They'd come back.
****
pablobix1 (1 year ago) Great song
****
charon000 (1 year ago) Go the Indigenous music! Wish the main radio stations would play more of it.
****
shaidarcuebiyar (1 year ago) This, the first video version, is better than the later Filthy Lucre remix version's video - which proved to be more popular. Here the political message is loud and clear: what is a promise worth? Both in a politician's mouth and from a people: there's still no treaty. Mandawuy's band rock and are so full of human joy. Look quickly at 2:31 to see a young Gurumul: his performance at the 2008 ARIAs was awesome. In the words of another song that Mandawuy sang, as part of a trio, "I am Australian".
****
AussieMatt336 (1 year ago) Thanx for this upload, i use to listen to this all the time when i was kid.... cheers

i need it for a presentation in the school...

****
Axelversteeg (1 year ago) yeah, it seems pretty hard to access

i can find it on telstra music, but it's a remix :/

although u could type "youtube to mp3" in google, can convert the sound of this video into an mp3, but it won't be the best quality

****
brinjen72 (1 year ago) I bought this song off iTunes only recently, hope that helps.
****
barriehomeboy (1 year ago) I bought the record back when it was on vinyl, and my friends thought I was odd for listening to Australian music. I'm glad to see they are still a force in the internet age. As for the issue of aboriginals and their status, we're all living with the aftermath of the British Empire's conquest of the Earth, in all of the colonies. I'm in Canada. Our aboriginal people are living in squalor, and suffer the same social ills as those in Australia. We should be ashamed of ourselves.
****
wildflower96 (1 year ago) i think that the Aboriginal ppl are beautiful ppl...awesome video/song btw.

****
passingthruthislife (5 months ago) One of the most powerful, wonderful songs ever put together...the lyrics resonate into the now:
'White promises can disappear just like writing in the sand'
'The planting of the Union Jack
Never changed our law at all'
One only has to look at Brit colonizer mentality comments here to get a grasp on how entrenched scientific racism, 'white' supremacy and Brit domination are in the 21st century. I salute Indigenous Australia for their courage, dignity and proud culture. Fight on

****
ajb2066 (5 months ago) Interesting comments. For me, when listening to this song, I always contemplate that to this day, a treaty between the traditional owners of this continent and the colonisers, has never eventuated. I hope I live long enough to see that actually happen. I hope I live long enough to see the Aboriginal people achieve some real justice for the atrocities committed against them since 1788. Looking around me generally and to some of the comments posted here, I unfortunately don't hold much hope.

niddy9 (2 months ago) from a white man to a black man, I offer the the spoken word , `sorry`, not to be politically correct , but to help put aside the sins of past generations. We are all brothers and sisters of this great country, none of us own it, we just look after it to pass on...................peace for all Australians
Yothu Yindi blend white and black in music, openning minds on both sides to see we are all the same

[Editor: http://www.nma.gov.au/exhibitions/now_showing/first_australians/language...
“In numerous languages across South-Eastern Australia, Koori means man or people. Since the 1960s, it has become widely used in New South Wales to describe Aboriginal people in general. Variations: Coorie, Goorie, Koorie."
Koorie with an 'e' is a word used by Aboriginal people in Victoria."]

****
lalamango1 (1 week ago) Great song. As an Indian-American (parents are from India - Kerala State- and came to the USA in '74), I can't help notice the similarities in the phenotypes of the Aboriginal people of Australia and the Dravidians, the original inhabitants of India.
Can't wait till the day Aborigines get economic and political parity, and the white racists(not all whites, just the racists mind you) get their comeuppance. Empires rise and fall; the hunters become the hunted.
****
MrBenzyboi (1 week ago) This song has been played in over 14 Australia Day Skywork Shows! With spectacular sync, which brightened up the cities of Australia.
