I happened upon this wedding video because I was looking for a video of the song "Here My Cry O Lord". *
I'm including this video on jambalayah.com because of the fabulous traditional African fashions wore by the women at the wedding, ant to a lesser extent, wore by the men. I'm especially fond of the styles of geles (head wraps that are tied in certain ways and not sewn, pinned, or manufactured in those styles) that are wore by women at this wedding. I often wear a gele, but don't know how to wrap mine as intricately as the women do who are shown in this video.
Judging from the clothing, and the custom of "dashing" the honored guest with dollar bills",
I would hazard a guess that the majority of these people are of Nigerian descent. I feel very cerain that the majority of these people living in Great Britain are of some other West African descent such as Senegalese or Liberian (or at least I believe that they are wearing traditional clothing form a West African nation such as Nigeria, Senegal, or Liberia.
By the way, I'm not sure if the wedding guests in this video were dancing to "Hear My Cry O Lord" during every shot of the video, or were only dancing to that song some of the time. It's possible that this song was simply picked as the soundtrack for the different dance scenes from the wedding. If so, that begs the question why this song, or any other Gospel song was picked instead of any other song with a danceable beat.
My Black American background causes me to be surprised to see adults doing social dances to Gospel songs since mixing the sacred and the profane that way was (and still is) definitely frowned upon in my culture. Indeed, some Baptist and some other Christains prohibit any type of social dancing. Videos such as this one demonstrate that this is not at all the case in every culture.
