Justino111 (2 years ago) Hey Sukapura, thanks for the video!!!!. Awesome, awesome, awesome...there is little we can say that hasn't been already said about this fantastic, historical, marvelous, mind blowing quintet.
****
WartsHogNYC (2 years ago) My favorite Miles Davis solo by far.
****
HolyKatana (2 years ago) Wayne Shorter is absolutely sick in this performance. Miles had so many great players in his band throughout his career. I mean, where would John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Mike Stern, and countless other jazz stars today be without Miles?
[Editor: In jazz vernacular and among some other persons in the USA, “sick” is high praise.]
****
holladayinnn (2 years ago) About how old was Williams in this recording?
****
Trommesune (2 years ago) nearly 22
****
djggou (2 years ago) I'm not the worlds biggest jazz fan, but i love Miles, and 'Round About Midnight is a fantastic album. In fact i prefer the music on the album in comparision to the music on show here...am i in a minority?
****
ng311706 (1 year ago) coltrane kills on that album
[Editor: “Kills (on that album) is also high praise.]:
****
captainampersand (1 year ago) I love it how they spontaneously change tempos around 7:10
****
skinnypenguin3 (1 year ago) I love how they took standards and did these crazy versions.
****
DsmB2007 (1 year ago) could listen to this forever! =)
****
zaqmlp1234 (1 year ago) miles before he heard james brown and got funky
****
MikeNichols50 (1 year ago) It is amazing that this band created a blueprint for jazz [interpretation of jazz standards] that musicians today still utilize...40 years later....
Thissound is the culmination of the deliberate decision they made [in the Plugged
Nickel performances of December 1965] to depart from their previous "style" and embrace what Tony Williams at that time called "anti-music"......
****
lepastol (1 year ago) Beauty full... =)
****
coolymac (1 year ago) What a beautiful sound! i can only imagine hearing it live and in person. this is timeless and it should be a required study for kids in school!!!

****
Originaldemanzanillo (1 year ago) Yes we are and we must forever be greatfull.
****
talkingwall (1 year ago) yeah, YouTube is the only reason it is possible to see all this stuff w/o paying a fortune for DVDs. I'm amazed at how many of the performances are out here, even performances by Eric Dolphy and Anthony Braxton. Simply amazing. Stuff I never thought I would ever get to see played live, right at my finger tips! Hooray for Youtube!
****
GirlPaint (1 year ago) Sheer perfection. I'm just learning about modal jazz and these videos provide a wonderful learning tool. Plus, Miles is without a doubt the finest, the best, the most challenging and innovative musician of the 20th century.
****
cobaltjones (1 year ago) It's not purely modal. they indicate the actual changes at certain points
****
miguimigui1 (1 year ago) miles is the star that wll shine forever
****
flagshower (1 year ago) Miles plays what words cannot convey.
****
cobaltjones (1 year ago) Does there exist a DVD with black and white footage of the quintet's complete live performances? I would pay at least a hundred to obtain it.
****
bmaxd (1 year ago) DVD - Miles Davis: Around Midnight. Filmed in 1967.

jazzmunky (1 year ago) Man, I need this music so much sometimes, it can lift you out of despair. Not into some false happy high, but to what's real and tolerable.
****
cleverlady1 (1 year ago) absolutely! just found this whilst browsing yt. cosh this guy is good11
****
caoniya (1 year ago) i love how davis finds that melody. as if he's searching for something, in the dark, maybe round midnight.
and shorter...when i hear that first series of notes its as if he tore a curtain open to let the street lamps in.
i can't say enough for this song, except thanks to thelonius for inspiring such a wonderful channel for interpretation. if my fingers were thumbs i'd put all ten up!
****
FlowJazz (1 year ago) Yo, that was beautifully said... I completely agree. This band was just amazing. Herbie's feel is incredible.
****
confoozled3737 (1 year ago) He did have perfect pitch...xD
****
creolefreak22 (1 year ago) This is why I love YouTube. Thanks for posting this.
****
Oldskoolmusiclvr62 (1 year ago) This is classic Miles at his Best w/this Lineup of Musicians & it does'nt get any better than this.
****
ghostofdolphy (1 year ago) Wayne Shorter has to be one of the most creative improvisers ever.
****
FrankieDaCat (1 year ago) Miles isn't exactly simple. He doesn't crowd his notes. This performance isn't what I'd call simple, especially what Herbie is doing ... that is .. sublime.
****
rorrofunkamedic (1 year ago) no diss, agression or something like that... bu tthis is the best thing (art) that usa has given to the world.. JAZZ BABY.. god i love this music
****
creolefreak22 (1 year ago) Thank you SO very much for sharing this. Incredible - and I know I'll watch this over and over.

Killer Miles and Shorter solos
****
ViperEye (1 year ago) Great intro to the song, always loved that part.
****
nickutah1 (1 year ago) I don't think I've ever seen video of Wayne Shorter before, so that was a treat- We can still catch Herbie Hancock live as I was lucky to do about a yr ago, but Miles alas is long gone. Great quality video. YouTube is an amazing archive of important jazz performers that the public can readily access.
****
PsychosisGnome (1 year ago) 7:00 is HOLY TIME CHANGE BATMAN. That part is just crazy.
****
realnicoli (1 year ago) A group of geniuses! I'm reading 'Miles' the autobiography right now, so it's cool to review things with his perspective in mind. I've been hearing so much of this music in a new way now!
****
2200965 (1 year ago) Absolutely amazing, the beauty of each artist and the love of their instrument and the passion for the music they feel. It's awesome!
Oh what a blessing to feel and deliver such music.
****
dwightkschrute80 (1 year ago) Beautiful, mellow trumpet tone. He certainly had a different approach to the trumpet than say Bix Beiderbecke or Louis Armstrong. I'm not a jazz expert, but the more I listen, I am better able to discern between the styles, and to know what I like.
****
bjroberts65 (1 year ago) GOD I LOVE IT!....MILES THE BEST!
****
musipass (1 year ago) Super, formidable, so exciting !!!
5***** and more !!!
Thank you
musipass
****
mtanner78 (1 year ago) Classic! Jazz at its BEST.
****
Rizerd (1 year ago) No one has been able to follow in Miles' footsteps. He was a true painter of sound and a person who' played' the silence . Notice how he waits for the background to evolve and never hurries or does virtuoso moves just demonstrate his ability. A true master of taste and timing.
****
kchamz (1 year ago) It's feels like "round midnight doesn't it. Driving alone through the city.
****
maccadiodrums (8 months ago) That has got to be the best way to describe the feeling of this song. I tried to be objective and think of another way of finding the feel, but I think you hit the head of the nail pretty hard there.
****
FunKDoc831 (1 year ago) It's an honor for me to be named after Miles Davis
blestemp (1 year ago) Fusion Jazz, right?
****
jloch84 (1 year ago) not really, this is just a standard
****
poet9981 (1 year ago) wouldn't this be modal?
****
jloch84 (1 year ago) not really... 'round midnight' is based more on a chord progression, whereas modal jazz is more about fewer chords and just vamping on a few scales. 'so what' or 'my favorite things' are good examples of modal jazz.
****
wildnites558 (1 year ago) Standard 'bop.
****
coolymac (1 year ago) miles is the ultimate musician.
this is magical! i LOVE this song!!!
****
henricodasvezia (9 months ago) True that. Music is the soul. Great music goes directly to the soul and needs no label. This shouldn't be labelled great Jazz. It should be labelled great music.
****
juldup11 (8 months ago) You're completley right man.
****
peppersax (11 months ago) One of the best Jazz quintets EVER!!!! Miles, Wayne (sounding alot like Trane), Herbie, Ron and of course, the young Tony Wiiliams on drums. I gotta go practice!
****
harfran16 (11 months ago) Trane-influenced? Wayne Shorter was a much more interesting improviser, a richer vocabulary, more complex rhythmically. Coltrane-influenced is not an unmixed compliment. Always had very opposed feelings about Coltrane, the later squeezing, efforting, so heavy and sober. Then I heard something on WBGO, done before the anguished, heavy stuff; I almost flew out of my car! I saw Miles in person in Cleveland, in 1962-3 but I'm not sure who was on tenor. Anyone know? Help an old guy today.
****
colsnake331 (8 months ago) May have been Hank Mobley since he didn't have a regular sax player at that time. Plus his hip joints were really bothering him and he couldn't stand on stage for long periods of time. Read "Milestones" by Jack Chambers.
****
OneRyt (11 months ago) I love how you get close ups of his fingers at work.
****
witgw (11 months ago) miles and john did some very nice work together. now there together again with charlie. bummer we are not allowed to hear them jam with oscar peterson until we reach the hereafter.
****
damondarkwalker (11 months ago) Proof of depth and beauty in man.
****
fendergasm (11 months ago) excellence in music. probably my favorite jazz group. the second quintet, correct me if i'm wrong
****
gatornation13 (11 months ago) 2nd great quintet was soo much better than the first. Don't get me wrong Trane was great, but he can't compare with Shorter's writing skills. And Hancock over Garland any day.
****
Mattytheman91 (10 months ago) i dunno trane was pretty awesome, the miles davis recording of this song with trane is awesome. Though I would say the first quintet seemed a bit better as a sextet with cannonball.
****
caoniya (10 months ago) i agree, i also dont think this all about individual talent, i think both the quintets and sextet show the whole was more than the sum of its parts. any musical group is like that. some combinations just work better than others.
****
ionmuniz (10 months ago) All I can say is that's a tough choice, wayne or trane?
Red or herbie?
****
cleanbeats007 (10 months ago) It's a shame Trane couldn't live longer, same with Clifford Brown. In my eyes, if those two had lived out their years they would be known as the greatest on their instrument ever. Yes-Cliff would be known more than Miles-he had everything he needed to be the greatest ever. Wayne is a genius, but Trane was, as McCoy Tyner put it, "like an angel sent here to play for us and then leave just as quickly as he came."

cocomaire (8 months ago) Wow, I feel sad for the people who just don't get this. So many people today are missing out because they just don't want to think that hard. Wake up from your gluttony induced comas and experience some quality!

ryanz06 (8 months ago) Miles IS cool. Listen to his phrasings, it's unique.
****
rtoriq (8 months ago) You betta PREACH! Exactly what they doing...missing OUT because they don't wanna try that hard. And if they wanna respond saying i listen to stuff that's for old ppl, well they can just close their ears and i'll just stay happy in my lil bubble of good music.

****
steelcitysong (6 months ago) ... i saw miles only once, at the Syria Mosque, in Pittsburgh, PA.,(jazz capital),and he was aiming the trumpet down, deep into his electronic era in the seventies.... an awesome, life changing experience....
****
lamardixon3 (6 months ago) I saw Miles live in Baltimore at a club called Peyton Place in the 70's. During the first break he came to the bar and asked my beautiful date for a light for his cigarete, Later she asked me who was he.

jocomoso1 (5 months ago) I grew up with Miles - in more ways than one - my parents loved this guy so much they named my little brother after him!
****
Timbalero561 (5 months ago) Wow! it just doesn't seem possible to play music on this this level, yet they did and many of them were very young when this was done.
****
Angrous (5 months ago) because they had dedication and love for it...which is a true rarity especially now in not just jazz but all aspects of life it is rare to find someone truly dedicated to anything

elfcounsul (4 months ago) Mulligan, JJ Johnson, Carlos Patato Valdez, Paul Desmond, Betty Carter, Eric Dolphy rocked my world, Oscar Peterson, Jobim, Joe Sample, Joe Zawinul, the Adderly brothers, Oscar Brown Jr. If it had a latin beat and some dark eyed beauty singing in Portuguese, I'm in heaven. Loved Chet Baker too.
****
danieltroche (3 months ago) you forgot ornette coleman....
****
MrRandomOwnage (3 months ago) You're missing Jack DeJohnette.
****
rodcrippler (4 months ago) i'm stilled amazed how jazz evolved so quickly from the 50's to the 70's, it's so cool to see guys like Miles Davis, Charles Mingus or Wayne Shorter doing classic jazz and then playing so complex arrangements later
****
grablemaple (4 months ago) I love hearing Hancock play the piano in this era, he is so creative.
This was just a really hot band, great post.

usmc2020627 (2 months ago) I agree...John Coltrane is on such a higher level than Wayne, or anyone else for that matter, that it's beyond discussion.

futurecrowntrumpet (2 months ago) great book, it changes everything i ever thought about not only miles but any and every other jazz great.
****
aaronamccoy (2 months ago) you can't really diss wayne because he was such a genius song writer and his playing is original, he don't really sound like trane, more sporadic and less revealing, secretive, haunting, childlike in his mystery, nah man, wayne is a killer in his own right..
****
daasb (3 weeks ago) THANK YOU - An actual VIDEO of good jazz on YouTube, posting a slide show just don't cut it
