sideslip2threshold (2 years ago) Cool beans! I was lucky enough to meet Hugh in Capetown in 2002 at the Capetown Jazz festival. What a legend. That was when he was going through his Latin-American phase -- but what gives me kicks is the *real* township stuff like "Uptownship" and this.
****
sandshark666 (2 years ago) this is excellant music.and, can you feel the vibe.....absolutely wonderful.

[Editor: The following two comments were written in response to deleted posts which apparently raised the issue of race/racism and/or questioned Paul Simon’s inclusion in this concert o.]
only1meon (1 year ago) Paul Simon ,one of organinzers, Check into his background. Great musician. Has a personal thing with South Africca. Those who judge, dont matter, those who matter ,dont judge.
****
missnnewi (1 year ago) As an African I love my people and I am very proud. I also love Paul Simon....Why do you have to make it a racial thing!! Give me a break..there is no division of race when it comes to music..Ignorance really isn't bliss!!!
This music is deep the rythm is fantastic...I love Hugh

TREYOLDHIPPIE (1 year ago) Beautiful. Paul Simon did good putting lots of greats back out, or to the light for the first time. Ladysmith Black Mambazo has great cd's. All music has greatness! We all become better with the vastness in music to help us through! It takes us there!
****

saxocopter (1 year ago) "Bring Him Back Home" has always been one of my favorite tunes by Hugh Masekela. I haven't seen this video in about 15 years. Thanks for posting!
****
jimbo1066 (1 year ago) Listen to some other stuff. If you like African music, try Oumou Sangare, Bassekou Kouyate, Miriam Makeba, Toumain Diabete.....I agree with what you sadi, but there's plenty out there that you can get your hands on!
****
JWhal1262 (1 year ago) With or without Paul Simon, Hugh Masakela& Band are great!!!
Paul Simon should be thankful for having the opportunity to play with them. Instead he ripped them off!
****
bookkeeper57 (1 year ago) He did not rip them off: he mounted this show, and gave them a platform. At personal risk, he went to South Africa with this group.
They are first rate, but it was Simon who mounted the show.
****
domonatricycle (1 year ago) the show was in zimbabwe actually, ne.
PamK36 (1 year ago) Show Hide 0 Marked as spam Reply | Spam Hugh had hits in the western world before he worked with Paul Simon. Look up "Grazing in the Grass" on You Tube.
****
bookkeeper57 (6 months ago) Show Hide +1 Marked as spam Reply | Spam Simon has my respect for giving that stage and venue to people like Masakela and Makeba. This concert made international stars of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
****
youvebeenthunderstru (1 year ago) I think it's fairly sad how our scope of music is generally limited to artists we hear about in America and the big names in Europe and how we don't realize just how vast music is in general. Who would ever have heard of Hugh Masekela and all of these other musicians if Paul Simon hadn't publicized it? And they're only 0.00000001% of the actual music out there.
****
mariannegoesasia (1 year ago) Masekela rocks! I used to listen to this song all the time!
****
ruemarova (1 year ago) I remember being at this concert in Zim...those were days
****
maxdrobot (1 year ago) I was a kid back then but was also in Zim If im correct this concert took place at Rufaro stadium..man those were really the days Zimbabwe was really one of the best places anyone would want to live in but look at it today it's so sad!
****
emtee (1 year ago) What is the name of the song that plays in the first 3mins?
****
Tornadoq2 (1 year ago) I think its "Township Jive".
****
emtee (1 year ago) Thanks
****
bookkeeper57 (1 year ago) Hugh Masakela's opinion song: "Bring back Nelson Mandela, bring him back home to Soweto.
I want to see him walking down the streets of
South Africa - -". Mandela was a political prisoner at the time of this concert.
****

****
manlinc (8 months ago) "We liberate the people with music" - Bob Marley once said. Indeed Masakela's performance here is a voice of a sufferer who contributed to the liberation of South Africa.
****
nnedimma2 (7 months ago) well said :()

mrscarysmith (5 months ago) I remember watching this concert as a kid...I love it and I'm glad I found it so my kids can watch. And I love Hugh Masekela...he was one of the people that made me want to play trumpet. Thanks for posting this

niecydurley (4 months ago) I remember when I first saw this concert. I waws mesmarized by the songs, the music, the musicians, and the african scens in the background. Hard to believe that aparteid was going on during this concert! Masekela, Makeba, Mambazo and Paul---PURE GENIOUS!!
****
tikgal (2 months ago) That was Rufaro stadium Harare !
[Editor: This concert took place in Zimbabwe because of South Africa’s policy of racial separation.]
****
12345dubi12345 (3 months ago) TOMOROW! that dude has the look of a great man about him
****
chaserUSA48 (3 months ago) you guys speak as if you know -- you know next to nothing of this man Masekela and his struggle to make music in his own Johannesburg South Africa - he wrote anti apartheid music RE pro african pride music -- he was married to Mariam but far more gifted and gutsy! been listening to Hugh since 1965!
****
lewdypoo (3 months ago) Disregarding the fact that Africans have been exploited for over 50 years, you should check out Django Reinhardt. A different struggle but a similarly impressive musical background.
****
saullouis (2 months ago) oh to have been there!
