bobble63 (2 months ago) whats going on is a tribute to Tammi Terrell who he dueted with on 2 albums and included "aint no mountain high enough" and "aint nothing like the real thing"...Tammi died at just 24 and Marvin didn't sing live for nearly 4 years...this was his come back track and a tribute her....one of the best female soul vocalists ever..in my opinion anyway !!!

IPrinceMajestic (2 months ago) I agree

****

jjjones77 (2 months ago) Mr, Eddie "Bongo" Brown,. one of the fantastic Motown studio musicians. This will NEVER be repeated.

****

MilesTrane21 (2 months ago) This has got to be one of the most poignant musical performances ever captured on film. R.I.P. Marvin. We love and miss you.

Zeshly (2 months ago) This is why I love music.
Thankyou Mr Jamerson, the more I listen and learn, the more important you become.
****
UnoEins (2 months ago) Jamerson couldn't stop grooving if he tried. And he still groovin in the big gig in the sky.
JAMERSON FOREVER!

****

CE750 (2 months ago) btw, it merits noting that in a time when the studio musicians "the band" never got much by way of credit, Marvin insisted on introducing the band, with special emphasis on Jamerson.. he used to call him "the incomparable James Jamerson"

****

CE750 (2 months ago) Ladies and Gentleman... the most influential and important electric bass player of all time. /Bow Mistro Jamerson.

CheckMate657879 (2 months ago) Marvin - pouring out his soul -as usual. The consummate musician - smooth - jazzy - soulful - moanful - urban blues - cool.
I miss you, Marvin. I love you. May your music live on and on and on ...
brainchild - Big thanks for posting this video.

davidleigh65 (2 months ago) beautiful............not just the song ....but the entire message that runs through this majestic album
it is a devastating social commentary and a call for radical social change......change that the poor and disadvantaged in the US are still waiting for nearly 40 years on
i bet when marvin sang these words he couldnt have imagined that all these years later young american men were still being sacrificed in some insane military adventure and millions of americans dont even have health care!

****

carole0925 (2 months ago) The message is as true today as it was when Marvin first recorded it in 1973.

****

mcainiac (2 months ago) You are exactly right! Maybe even more so...Marvin hit the nail on the head, and its only gotten worse.
"Can't find no work can't find no job, money is tighter than its ever been!"---so prophetic!

****

sevadaj (2 months ago) What a voice! Fantastic!

****
hotdogcib (2 months ago) music knows no color, music has no barriers, I am a metal head, and our band is metal, but after our fourth set, we play this song in closing to slow the tempo down and to join everyone in the audiance together, upon leaving , and they love it, .......and so do we......

****

mioluce (2 months ago) only actual video of james jamerson on bass! That's insanity!
****
bigshotbaby17 (2 months ago) Jamerson is the best bass player of all time. Motown would not be Motown without him. His bass lines are as soulful and as much of a "beautiful voice" as all of their singers.

****

GypsiiJane (2 months ago) "War is not the answer...for only love can conquer hate." Truth.
The Amazing Marvin.......

****

gomoni87 (2 months ago) Marvin was before my time and I MISS HIM!!! Crazy how someone you never knew could have such an impact on you...his music is timeless and filled with so much soul. He could just throw that head back SANG!!!!!!! Thank you Marvin :o)

****

homp (2 months ago) If his tones were like fabric - it would be velvet and silk...

****

blackwirez (2 months ago)  He plays his voice like an instrument in this one... so cool & calm

****

blqceaser (2 months ago) That great bass player James Jamerson is just killing this song with those timeless licks of his! I see Marvin's main man Eddie "Bongo" Brown on the congas! Brother Eddie couldnt read music yet comprised one of the greatest studio bands and the greatest hit machine in music history, the FUNK BROTHERS. RIP Brother Eddie (Funk Brother) and Brother James Jamerson (Funk Brothers).

****

musiq91 (1 month ago) Sighs!! Marvin Gaye has the kind of voice that will make a bad day good..

****

liampaulmcguinness (1 month ago) This song always brings tears to my eyes. Thank you Marvin Gaye for your beautiful music. Peace.

****

eternalywd (1 month ago) I love these scenes from the south side of chicago. folks enjoying their selves in the park, dancing, riding bikes...

****
Wonderfuldaysable (1 month ago) This is absolutely his best performance of those two tracks. RIP Brother. You were one of the greatest ever.

James Jamerson on bass, my gosh kids today just do not know what they missed!!!!
Look him up and see what he contributed to. RIP J

****

Wonderfuldaysable (1 month ago) The transition into Whats Happening Brother makes me realize that the music today sucks!

****

RoxyRowins1 (1 month ago) I love this video because Mr.Gaye was a true artist who sang from his heart.

****

seniorwhite (1 month ago) This live 1972 performance is probably the greatest that Marvin ever recorded to video. It comes from the long out-of-circulation 1973 film, "Save The Children". The performance is quite simply transcendent, and features the great James Jamerson on bass and a middle section featuring just Gaye's voice and piano with conga backing.

****

thamwisai (1 month ago) No one today can touch Marvin....hes a once in a lifetime.
Couple him with the greatest bassist of all time and you have sounds that they make in Heaven
I was reading an article about how this decade has been one of the worst in history....40 years later this song is more relevant now then ever before.

****

harveysuperboy (1 month ago) It gotten worse. People looked like they had some hope of a better future.

****

thamwisai (1 month ago) @harveysuperboy
I ask that myself....its said that this whole global financial greed has touched everyone on this planet in some form or another.

****

SenorPlaid (1 month ago) The suite that runs from What's Happening Brother through to Mercy Mercy Me is about the most beautiful 15 minutes of pop ever written. Delivered with Marvin Gaye's velvet glove voice, you only realize what an iron fist the whole thing is once you read the words. It proves that you don't have to raise your voice to express anger and urgency.

****

astronoman11 (1 month ago) an awesome look back into the 70's. Everytime i watch this vid i feel like im traveling back in time

****

falcon656565 (1 month ago) How many of today's so called stars could write a song like this, plus play, sing it with so much ease live,...................a real superstar
****
def48 (2 weeks ago) Still come back to this vid time and time again. It's a priceless piece of live music and with The Hook on bass my my my I'm in heaven.

****

EMatlick (2 weeks ago) Amazing performance! Marvin is in great voice and James Jamerson's bass line is sheer perfection. I'm glad Jamerson's contributions are finally getting noticed. An unsung hero as all of the 'Funk Brothers' from the Motown Studios. To know more, check out the video 'Standing in the Shadow of Motown.'

****

im4evernocturnal (2 weeks ago) The GREATEST song and LP ever. Period. Years from now it will still be relevant.

****

luverlything (2 weeks ago) My favorite video on Youtube! A unique, moving, sensational perfomance which connects with the audience in a way one rarely sees. The genius of Marvin shines through in the lyrics and music of this song. A huge, huge loss to the world, Thank God we can still bathe in the sublime aura that is Marvin, thank you for sharing!

****

necrogauge (2 months ago) Every once in a while it's nice to be reminded of a time when mainstream musicians had real talent and skill.

****

str8outtatexas1 (2 months ago) man i'm a 42 n just wanna say there will never b another marvin gaye. all you young thugs n disrespectful clowns this is real music. this music has a real message n it's not about gangbanging, beating your girl, robbing people, doing drive by's,disrespecting elders or law enforcement.you young thugs have no diversity in your lifes. not all youngsters r bad kids, but a large percentage r. just sit down n listen 2 marvins music n come 2 your own conclusion. this music is rare n almost "extinct". love

****

michaelaf2 (2 months ago) we live in a crazy world now. it seems when the black panther party decreased in power, the black youth as an image, began to fight its own people. Don't misuse the term "thug" you should use gangstar. altough i agree with your statement.., these days are a lot harder on the youth we got all sorts of crazy technology to distract us from loving. as u see in the video that black family bond was strong in these days. different times mroe pressure, more distractions

****

michaelaf2 (2 months ago) how many years ago was this performance? This song can still be applied to todays realitie. Why is it all of the Best Artists that carry a message from god have died or murdered.

****

rayjr62 (2 months ago) Late summer, 1972. The movie was released in early 1973.

softsouthernknight (2 months ago) I guess this is the big question still today as our politicians meet behind closed doors. Marvai had it right - "What's goin on?"

****
superfunkyheroe (2 months ago) Jamerson is a Beast!...Bass Players Go Back and Study and See How He Transformed Music...This is a The Most Important Song of Our Generation..The Beginning of Conscious Music!

****

vivecarocks (2 months ago) Everything about this song is PERFECT! "What's going on" brings me some comfort for the crazy world we live in. I don't think about race, religion, social class, etc, when I listen to this song--because he's really talking about conflict among all of us in my opinion--not just the war

****

tshala23 (2 months ago) This song was from 1970 and here we are today going through exactly the same things. Marvin had such great vision. Sad, sad loss to the world of music.
