Rosa Sat - song for Barack Obama

"Written and performed by Amy Dixon-Kolar (c) 2008 Asharta Music/ASCAP. This was written a few days after November 4, 2008 and was inspired by the quote used as the chorus and the celebrations and photos of this historic day. Photographer Bernie Kleina was kind enough to give permission for me to use his photos of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the murals in the Pilsen area of Chicago."

Video Description:
This "video" features a collage of photographs from the 1960s African American civil rights movement.

"Rosa sat, so Martin could walk
Martin walked so Barack could run
Barack ran so all our children could fly"
-Amy Dixon-Kolar

The poster of this video (who may have been the singer/composer Amy Dixon-Kolar) provided several internet links that addressed the questions "What was the original version of this saying and who first said it?"
Here is one of those links:

Sourcing The Quote Rosa Sat So Martin Could Walk; Martin Walked So Barack Could Run; Barack Ran So We Could All Fly
-David Hershovitzs; Jan. 23, 2009

"Widely attributed to Jay-Z, this quote is becoming epic. And rightly so. It resonates with everyone who hears it...While it didn't originate from Jay, he did tweak it into a more manageable and rap-able sound bite. "He heard it somewhere... But can't remember the name," Jay's office reports. French philosopher Bernard-Henry Levy quoted it on [the] Charlie Rose [television show], but it didn't originate with him either. After looking around, I can say with some certainty that the now celebrated words were uttered by Cleo Fields, former Congressman and State Senator from Louisiana, while speaking in February last year. The original version goes like this:

"W.E.B. Dubois taught so that Rosa Parks could take a seat. Rosa took a seat so we all could take a stand. We all took a stand so that Martin Luther King Jr. could march. Martin marched so Jesse Jackson could run. Jesse ran so Obama could WIN."

Dubois and Jesse Jackson are erased from the popular version, but at least now we know they were included in the original and who originally said them".

jktaadn (11 months ago) The point of this song is not that Martin Luther King and Obama share the same religious or political views. The point is that the success of the civil rights movement has created a more tolerant American society where a man who is African-American can become president.

convexional (11 months ago) Show Hide 0   Marked as spam Reply | Spam There are so many reason why Obama won, and why the people chose him. Which makes the success of the first African American to win the Presidency even more astounding. This video powers the message home in a most poignant way. Deep thanks.

Adaly912 (11 months ago) AD King, Martin's younger brother, was my classmate in High School. I participate in the March on Washington organized by Bayard Rustin at which MLK made his famous speech, and I was in Memphis the day before MLK's funeral to stand with thousands to declare his dream was still alive. Obama is a testimony to Hope embraced even then, and not giving up if the reality of change emerges slowly. What a lesson for future generations!

christeneledoux (11 months ago) I am enjoying this... however, these lyrics have already been circulating around the internet and not from this particular musician. Anyway, still nice. Thanks for sharing.

marsh820 (11 months ago) I will never claim to have written the words to the chorus, although I did adapt them somewhat. That quote has been around for quite a while (see my sources for the quote in 'more info'). But I did write the words to all the verses and the music for this song.

jamettal (11 months ago)  Lovely. Wonderful way to begin African American History Month by showing the linkages and benefits of the struggles of Black People as intricately connected to, and an affirmation of the positive struggles by whites and all races for justice, peace and advancing the humanity of all people.

beansproutsinc (11 months ago) I was so surprised to see my son "flying" on my feet in this video!! That was 25 years ago and it truly captures my intentions for him and all our children - the faith in a world that is willing to help them to fly!! BEAUTIFUL song and we're honored to be a part of its imagery!

Thank you!!
