MrDandy1 (2 years ago) Hello Oskeywoskey How are you? I have to agree. The band is tight. Its pure good times. As a yourba man myself I understand what Fela is saying . the man is out of sight. I have to agree this is in my top 3 Video clips on You tube. Again its pur Gold I like all music. but this is played because Fela and his band loved music you can see the joy in his face. Mtv and the world of hip hop have a long way to go. Long live his music. my God the sun does not rise and shine in America only.
****
Ancephalic (2 years ago) I am a long term music fan always digging and Love Fela. Ironically, it took some time for me to find his music. the music store had a book on Fela but none of his music. I recentally saw "the good bad and Queen" who featured Tony Allen on drumbs but we were not too happy because he didn't show off the way we had so wished. America has much to learn about the music they are listening to and how Fela has influenced them from Hip hop to the like of Brian Eno.
Peace
****

Tchalla77 (2 years ago) Now this is whad I'm talkin' bout! Absolutely off da chain!!! Great seein' the Man in his early 70s prime. Makes me proud to be a Nigerian. Mucho respect to the undisputed King of Afrobeat and one of the greatest, most innovative musicians to ever grace our planet.

****
dairyflat (2 years ago) Interesting guy and great, superb, performer. His gender politics were appalling though.
****
leketoob (2 years ago) I remember in those days that the worst thing girls could be called was an 'omo fela' as they were seen as responsible. But Fela was without a doubt the most powerful perfomer in Africa during his era.
****
yerasko (2 years ago) He's basically saying - "Let me say my bit, you cant silence me", "you can lock me at home but you cant silence me".
****
dunamiso (2 years ago) This is a person that was greater than the president in his days...
Baba 70, rest in peace, one love!!!

coozeebaby (2 years ago) A-O! I wish to say I big enough to go see this man for concert. His music has uplifted me so many times here in Canada. If only my Nigerian people back home will act...
****
365Hustler (1 year ago) Nna, How far? You also need to be part of the ACTION. Each and All must take matters in their own hands.
You being in Canada have more of an advantage to cause impact than those in Nigeria itself.
****
coozeebaby (1 year ago) You are right my friend. I'm still young, eager and hopeful. Like my father says, it's us young folks that can start to bring about concrete change in our country. Thanks for reminding me that even though I'm in Canada I can have an impact. Peace.
****
365Hustler (1 year ago) Mek una giv'am up 4 Mr.KUTI. TRUE LEGEND - performing back then in my Home City.

STEVEFINNERTY (1 year ago) if your seeking footage of Fella there is a documentary called 'music is the weapon',which is quite good.
****
komputaman (1 year ago) i think ginger really sparked fela, although this one is true west africa at that time, we thought a better world was coming, fela changed his sound accordingly, a brave man!
consequently...
****
keilyngodson26 (1 year ago) So much soul. What happened to us?
****
inthebluescrossroad (1 year ago) MTV...
****
LiberalLibra (1 year ago) does those women's dancing resemble anything??.. Think hip-hop and dancehall reggae, identicle moves, even similar clothing... The AfroBeat lives on today more than we could even imagine!.. We need to get back to the conscience aspect, but the rhythm and soul will always be there.
****
okpanam1 (1 year ago) King fela in action' everybody say yeah yeah.
Fela was truely one of the greatest musician that ever lived. Highly charismatic' this is pure entertainment first class.
****
bosede1960 (1 year ago) This is one of the rare clips of Fela in the 70s. It is a shame, the girls have no place in history. They are equally good or even better that Josephine BAKER. Welll done to the producer.
****
Secretlyanothername (1 year ago) Absolutely. They were a huge part (not just 'Mattress'!). Could they play like that without dancers shimmying it up on the dancefloor? Emphatically no. Pity they never got their respect, especially not from Fela.
My god, this video is insane, totally insane. And proof that the best music comes out of crazy little bars in the middle of nowhere.
****
bosede1960 (1 year ago) Thank you for the reply,Secretlyanothername.
I hope that the ones alive will be reading our comments.
****
metronne (1 year ago) aaaaaaah! this video is crazy and crazily amazing in every way. what a performer! the girls are amazing too.... the one he pushes into the dance ring around 4:10 is my favorite

demybliss1 (9 months ago) oh my !!! i never would have expected to see a clip so old and so clear from Naija.. This is amazing!
****
usmarkone (8 months ago) Fela loved James Brown and Miles Davis. You can hear it in his music. He took other styles and made it completely original.
****
leketoob (7 months ago) Although Fela was not as universal or well known worldwide as Bruce Lee, MJ, Elvis, Ghandi etc he was no less a major force that shook Nigeria to its core and never will we see another like him again.
****

ludogovno (5 months ago) nowadays u rarely see good music anywhere, especially on TV
****
caeserpink100 (5 months ago) Amen
****
ThinkingApe3000 (4 months ago) Music in NorthAmerica today, as the industry sees it is just another product to be peddled like a pair of shoes or a pack of gum: discardable. In the studio they've forgotten about the magic and the power that exists in the live performance. The beauty of walking to the edge of the precipice and looking down but not falling; No more risks. I must always search for the place where the magic happens, in a concrete metropolis they call the City of Angels. Break down the walls!
****
mybabyiscute (4 months ago) I know their parts of LA that probably seem like post war Nigeria. Break 'em all down!
****
mybabyiscute (4 months ago) This is raw life people. They said it was post war. These people are saying Live THROUGH THIS.
****
yellokake (4 months ago) Dope! But i'm mad he pushed ol' girl's head like that tho, lol.
[Editor: “Dope” is a American complimentary slang term. Used here that word probably is short for “The music is dope”.]
****
visionwriter22 (4 months ago) ya i know, rite?
****
danielsch13011984 (4 months ago) was fela egocentric?
****
taipan419 (2 months ago) to be very successful, you do have to be egocentric.
success is not for humble people.
peacemaker083 (2 months ago) Depends what your definition of success is. I say no.
****
taipan419 (2 months ago) oh well.. tell me who is successful and is not?
fela was egocentric...so are most of our great politicians and musicians. they may cloack their egocentrc natures in a sheen of populist behaviors. in the end they still have it in them
****
peacemaker083 (2 months ago) Again, depends on your definition of success. I wouldn't call politicans great and most of modern 'musicians' are no talent clowns.
****
taipan419 (2 months ago) at this point i say cheerio...
if you cannot recognise 'modern' musicians that are great or that there are some 'truly' great politicians and statesmen...
then you must be truly living in a la la land...
there are great pips, and most are very egocentric!
****
13triki (1 month ago) I agree
****
isabt4 (3 months ago) Wonderful, excellent music and dance!!! The music oozes with rebellion against repression, rebellion against conforming. The way the beautifully powerful women dancers are treated by Fela is VERY ironic. POWER TO WOMEN!!!! and the world will be a better place.
****
royaloakful (3 months ago) isabt4 lol, it's pretty well known that Felas' views on women were pretty misogynistic
****
solatiut (3 months ago) Where did this video come from? Ive been looking for Fela videos of this era...They seem to be few and far between. Never seen this before...great video!

****
korupshun1 (5 days ago) This is why Fela was Hot. Such stage play. Geniune artistry, engagement with the audience, innovation etc. Simply was the greatest. Look at the dancemoves. This was 1971 but I see dance moves that later transformed into Breakdance, and even the so called Krumping and clowning (dance styles) that are less than 5 years old. FELA WAS GREAT. HE LIVES
****
GingerBronze (4 days ago) Africans KNOW how to party!
