SoulTooSoul (2 years ago) Fela was the heart&soul of Africa. He was a giant among mere mortals. He was a musician, politician, iconoclast ,revolutionary, visionary, international artist. He challenged the social elite. Fela cried out for urgent change in the African tribal caste power structure. He explored issues few would ever speak about in a public forum. As Africa spins out of control, in turmoil, and social upheaval, Fela words and voice resonates. (AfroBeat)

Beauchamp21 (1 year ago) I know I have probably asked this, but what is the name of this first song?

****
JYDE1234 (1 year ago) This is one of Fela's classic. Great song. The name of the song is called"M.O.P.", which literally means"Movement of the People". Beautiful song. Nicely arranged, composed and highly critical song. Only Fela could compose a song like this, trust me. FELA, ORIGINAL CHOIR MASTER. FELA FOR EVER. FELA BLACK PRESIDENT.

chukkka08 (1 year ago) Fela was a multi-instrumentalist musician and composer, originator of the afrobeat style, human rights and political activist for the emacipation of the poor and ill treated. no wonder HMV ranked him #46 on a list of the top-100 most influential musicians of the 20th century.
easy3s (1 year ago) well ya of course. i mean what difference can one man make ... note the sarcasm. i think that hmv ranking system is loosely based on album sales... just a guess..
****
easy3s (1 year ago) otherwise you'd think that he might be ranked a little higher...rightfully so...
****
chukkka08 (1 year ago) Your quite right easy3s..... Fela is Top Top class and deserves to be ranked higher.
****

rethuglikan (11 months ago) afrobeat is mad spiritual...if you go to an afrobeat party...its the opposite of wannabe "cool" club vibe ... its raw soul.. a church like experience..if you roll through NYC check Jump and Funk w Rich Medina if you get the chance...you will not be dissaapointed

JJTHEFOX (10 months ago) I love Fela's music! This guy is like a Nigerian/Yoruba version of 2pac, Marvin Gaye, and James Brown rolled into one! its a shame this guy doesn't get as much play as Marley (IMO Fela is 10x the musical revolutionary Marley ever was).
****
Tendayi79 (10 months ago) I love Fela he tells it like it is, No fear, he doesn't care who's listening.
Thank you for your words Prophet Fela Kuti
****
61rules (9 months ago) Fela! opens on Broadway in Fall 2009, it got good reviews when produced off-Broadway. A whole new generation will be exposed to his music. I just now heard of him because of my interest in musical theatre.
****
grandpasun (9 months ago) The young sax player is his son Femi.
****
bubblesmoke420 (8 months ago) love this jam greetings from Canada
****
DEH013 (6 months ago) Some have compared Fela to James Brown and other American R&B musicians. But they were American and had to make music that fit into what the U.S. authorities would allow them to make. My auntie used to say...you go as far as they allow you too...dream of rising to the clouds, you might end up in the tree tops!

Fela spoke of his nation. His music was unsanctioned, uncensored, because it was so good that we free American's and Europeans demanded to see and hear his work.
****
n75e (6 months ago) For what its worth I am a white American and FELA will ALWAYS be my BLACK PRESIDENT!!! Incase u wonder, found him on accident long ago. I set a tape to record a documentary (DJEMBEFOLA -MAMADY KEITA) on WorldLink TV. Tape kept recording and accidentally recorded Teacher don't teach me nonsense! Hooked ever since. Have since turned many a person onto FELA.
****
DEH013 (5 months ago) You know what n75e, I used to listen to him many years ago because my girlfriend was a member in city dance troupe that used Afrobeat and R&B for their choreography, but I didn't know who he was then. About five years later in L.A. my manager had several of his tapes sitting in his collection. My manager was white and a very conscious brotha like yourself.
****
n75e (5 months ago) Hey Thanks! Thats cool you took the time! Peace
****

gbalah162 (3 months ago) god why cant more artist make music like this now a days. all that nonsense lyrics and fastness cant compare to the natural movement of Fela.
****
supervirtuouswoman (2 months ago) What is the name of this song/
****
geligurl (1 month ago) @supervirtuousw203oman its called 'movement of the people.'
****
ywa2000 (1 month ago) The beginning of the performance is an Instrumental Solo but I believe the song on the second part of the performance is M.O.P (Movement of the People). The song was written with regards to his political party formed in 1979 when he decided to run for the presidency of Nigeria in the Second Republic before his candidacy was denied by the Establishment. Also note that @ time 8:30 the perfomer that has a Sax solo is his son the renowned Femi Kuti who took after his father but slowed down of late.

After posting this comment thread, I wrote this comment to that thread:
"Azizip17 (5 days ago) Thank you for posting this video. I love Afrobeat music.

Much respect. If it is okay to do so would someone please share what "Abami Eda" and "Someone else wrote
aba mi ega. Is that the same phrase? And what does Orun e re o" mean? I know they are in the Yoruba language and I'm guessing that Orun has something to do with Orunmila. But I would appreciate translations of these phrases from a Nigerian.

Thanks!
-an African American sister

On March 19, 2010, I received this message from limi4sure:
"abami eda is translated extraordinary or supernatural person, and orun e re o is like saying rest in peace to the dead, the word orun is translated heaven, orunmila is the combination of two words orun and mila."

Thanks limi4sure!
