harrubacool (2 years ago) there's no one who can compare to hampton.who's the guitarist?
****
SwingMan1937 (2 years ago) That would be the incomparable Billy Mackel on guitar - almost as much of a guitar mainstay with Hamp as Freddie Green was with Basie.
****
11216752 (2 years ago) At the Appolo..at end of Flying Home he jumped right through the bass drum!!
****
macvoutie (2 years ago) Hamp, Swinging with that big backbeat. Alright!
****
soulfire2588 (2 years ago) who's doing the high trumpet stuff? Is that leo shepherd?
****
stinso (2 years ago) Kat Anderson....the king of whistle.
Kat has 4 & 5 octave range!....for real!
****
soulfire2588 (2 years ago) I don't think Cat Anderson played with Lionel Hampton.
****
stinso (2 years ago) No sir, not exclusively. He has been a guest musician of LH many times though. It was tough times then, imagine being a top notch musician & tryin to live off of peanuts. It wasn't uncommon for musicians to farm themselves around for hire & for survival's sake.
He played for the DUKE.
[Editor: My assumption is that “the Duke” was Duke Ellington.]
****
soulfire2588 (2 years ago) Yeah i knew he played for duke. Playing for other bands makes alot of sense, just never thought about it before...
****
alaskangrown19 (2 years ago) just got back from lionel hampton jazz fest... woww
AMAZING!! and i love this song :)
****
Logical19 (2 years ago) i love jazz!
****
crustyhead2 (1 year ago) Wicked. Lionel was the man...
****
SCLOGSE (1 year ago) Was that Patty Page? what a glamour doll.
****
whenaman (1 year ago) Did I read recently that he passed away penniless in Manhattan, NY? Dear God. If that's true, what a shame. What a gifted man.
****
Belharg (1 year ago) I saw him in the lionel hampton festival in 2002 at the University of Idaho. It was almost as if he willed himself to live long enough to perform one last time. Though he was bound to a wheelchair and his aid had to give him his sticks, he was still able to keep rhythm well for someone of his age who had suffered a stroke. It was remarkable.
****
MetryRoad (1 year ago) Fabulous. It doesn't get better than this.
Best Wishes
****
elineerie (1 year ago) Not saying it's Hamp's fault necessarily but it could get better. How about a horn solo? It could have been programming time constraints but seriously, a central part of this thing is a sax blowing the lid off the place
****
roarkachu (1 year ago) the vibraphone was rather new and novel to jazz, so it was made the spotlight of the programming. as a sidebar, i totally miss the days when vibraphone solos didn't have to be walls of notes and they had breathing room and melodic content...
****
funstuff2006 (1 year ago) New in 1957? Did he not play Vibes for Benny Goodman's Orchestra and small groups back in the 30s and 40s? My little sidebar, (though I wasnt even around for it) I miss the days when musicianship and composition of this scale got the respect it deserved in the

maalth (1 year ago) If you can find the album with Hamp and Buddy Rich called Total Swing Volume 1. The tracks that best displays his skills is Takin' the A Train, I'll Never Be the Same. He supplements the piano very well in Latin Silk. Frankly all the tracks are great, who am I kidding!?!
****
sproggino (1 year ago) Lionel.... from my home city... Louisville.
He did an album with Teddy Wilson... well a couple I think.... but One O'Clock Jump... its an album I always go back to.
Gotta love the vibes.
****
kalangors (1 year ago) that's amazing!! =D
jazz is a wonderful world!!
****
Bokonondawg (1 year ago) The band is smokin' hot! Lionel is a master of the instrument...agree that we are lucky to have a video of his work.
****
coffeyking19 (1 year ago) He's absolutly great
****
Spargle22 (11 months ago) WOW!!! he is amazing!!
****
gm4fam (11 months ago) The master at work - how poor the world is without the likes of LH.
****
darthrebelpenguin (11 months ago) I always liked the name Vibraharp better, why did that never catch on, exactly?
****
ryanstewartguitar (11 months ago) phone's got too popular. i think they're gonna change it to vibracell here soon.
ba dum ch.
i'm lame.
****
Stabacs (10 months ago) LOL
****
cawiddison (11 months ago) I'm amazed nobody has mentioned the 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert.
LH was at his very best with the Benny Goodman trio and quartet.
OscarPetersonFan (10 months ago) Not only the Carnegie Hall Concert, but all the recordings with Benny Gooman. The Carnegie Hall concert is great; I just found two LPs with that recordings. Interesting detail: some weeks ago I was playing with a bassist who had played in a trio with Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa.

tunein10 (11 months ago) A Lost Art, What Happened?
****
alshouse (10 months ago) I dig it, man, big time :)
****
AstralPlane1951 (10 months ago) He is also one of greatest drummers of all time, his stick work unparallel, what a tremendous talent..
****
msscott73 (10 months ago) woooow, they were clowning, boy. I tell ya they were clowning.
[Editor: I believe that “clowning” here refers to the California hip-hop type dance form of that name from which “krumping” derived. In this context “clowning probably is complementary and means something like “doing intricate moves while showing off”]
****
Lovecraft688 (9 months ago) My Dad told me about thisguy...never erdof him....tragic that more young people don' know about this kind of talent..he's AMAZING !
****
artsyone1 (9 months ago) When I was like 13 yrs old (1983), Disneyland used to have these Disneyland Jazz weekends and I got to sit right underneath Lionel Hampton at the Carnation Plaza. I was only 13 then, but even then I knew I was in the presence of greatness.
****
joe127413 (7 months ago) Who is the lefty guitarist here?
Wolfyx52x (7 months ago) John William Billy Mackel, he joined the Lionel Hamptons Big Band in 1944.
****
chronosynclastic8 (6 months ago) Go, Daddy, Go!!!!!
****
slice39 (5 months ago) No one could swing on the "vibes" like Hamp!! Fast or slow Hamp could do it all.
His 1947 live version of "Stardust" is considered by many to be the greatest jazz recording of all time.
hepcat2009 (5 months ago) Just wish we could see all the kinescopes from this 1957-58 CBS show. Within weeks of Hamp's live "Big Record" appearance, the Kenton band guested with Patti who sang with the band. On the soundrack I have, she sounds very adaptable to big band jazz. Aside from the corn she was forced to sing, Patti could be a swingin' solid sender.
****
eoswald203 (6 months ago) it's one thing to rock on the vibes, but does anyone physically rock out see (1:19) as much at the Lion?
****
jimeditorial (5 months ago) The whole…band is red hot. Why can't we have TV like this today?
[Editor: This comment is edited because of jambalayah’s policy about the use of profanity, even if it is used in a complementary manner.]
****
tails11 (5 months ago) Yeah! This is awsome! We need some more TV like this..
****
djhivesdotcom (5 months ago)..because everyone is obseed with being FAKE... "my"space, facebook, "i"-pods.. they are obseesed with their fake avatar persona rather than REAL acheivement and creativity.. as a result we have a nation of posers and dreamers rather than artists and builders... see my channel for more info
****
LuxAurumque (5 months ago) Because everyone wants their reality TV and their soap operas.
Seriously. This stuff is so genius.
****
axeman721 (4 months ago) because tv's too easy to do now. you don't have to have quality to be on tv anymore. I wish i was alive back then. Lionel's a beast.
****
davestezprimary (4 months ago) Wow nice video. Thanks!
****
fanwuren (4 months ago) Pure unadulterated GENIUS!
