Souleros (1 year ago) What a GREAT VIDEO!! …I didn't realize how much I missed the "Sugar Man" until seeing this....
He was & is such a mentor as a saxophonist, when I first began playing, I'd close my eyes & pretend I was him playing, taking on his classy, smooth, funky & soulful persona, and I often still bring in his spirit when performing...
He was a soft-spoken man of few words, cause he spoke so much via his tenor saxophone!

20b40 (1 year ago) "Bring It On Home To Me" (2:42) was written and performed by Same Cook in 1961. Cookes recorded version has Lou Rawls singing responses as an uncredited background singer.

That next year, the album, "LOU RAWLS and LES MCCANN - STORMY MONDAY" dropped in 1962. One of Lou's most jazz-oriented albums -- featuring backing by Les McCann's famous trio with Leroy Vinnegar and Ron Jefferson, perfectly suited to Lou's soulful renditions of the tunes on the album. Most of the numbers are bluesy ones.

PCMusic75 (1 year ago) This performance baffles me. I couldn't believe that Lou Rawls could be so great in Jazz with Stanley Turrentine and Les McCann together. The first time I heard from Lou Rawls was around 1970 when he was crooning "If I Only Had Time" a cover of a beautiful French song. Then I heard him crooning in "The Girl From Ipanema"... Brrrrrrrr singing like a crooner makes him sound terrible. He's so much better as a true jazz singer.

Waterside09 (10 months ago) "In the evening baby when the sun goes down and you don't get no soul food don't you feel sick?" is still my favorite all time Lou Rawls tune. Some of which he resurrected here. His first "Lou Rawls Live" album is so awesome! It's sad that the second "Lou Rawls Live" album obscured it. I have it on vinyl and should trot it out and post it some day...

CheckMate657879 (2 months ago) Wow - he did this in 1989? Lou Lou was still puttin' it down.
My favorite Lou Rawls version of this song, though, is with LesMcCann. But - this one is cool - classic Lou Rawls - and Stanley Turrentine - on the sax - real treat - couldn't beat that with a stick.

Thanks for posting.

RIP Lou Lou.
We miss you.
We love you.

Do you mean "people" complained? I'm a fan and I've always loved any genre Lou Rawls has selected. It's still him.

Artists who truly love music rarely stick to one genre. They're highly versatile.

George Benson has never changed his style too much - nor Wes Montgomery. You say the fans complained. Yet, those artists you mention continued to BLOW UP while the so-called fans were so-called complaining. How do you explain that? New fans, perhaps?
****
garyguitar (1 month ago) Yeah many of his "fans" complained when he began recording mainstream tunes instead of sticking with jazz/blues. They did the same with George Benson, Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Smith and others. That's the only way they could make a good living and provide for their families, besides they did open up a few minds to great musicians. I don't blame them.

garyguitar (1 month ago) Lou had the BEST voice ever and knew how to use it to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
