squideel (11 months ago) straight up R&B. Gotta love the godfather of soul.
****
gmandofgod (11 months ago) You must know that this was not the JB's, but the great James Brown Orchestra led by Alfred "Pee Wee" Ellis. The JB's didn't come until a year later and featured Bootsy and Catfish Collins.
****
Rsd79 (11 months ago) Great tune so laid back.
****
melende1966 (10 months ago) thanks for posting.

muhammadthejust (10 months ago) THANK YOU MOFUNKONE!!!

twilighter112108 (10 months ago) James Brown's flamboyant hair was as much a part of him as his music. It killed him to get rid of his pomp in the late sixties. He only did it to appease the narrow minded blacks who thought everyone should have a natural. As if that meant anything.
****
DrJPhoenixx (9 months ago) Funny thing, though...I always thought when he wore the short natural, it made him look younger.
****
gmandofgod (5 months ago) Actyally, he got rid of it, because he truly believed a the time, that his pomp would fly in the face of his Black and Proud message. He even wrote a song in 1969 for Hank Ballard titled, "How you gonna get respect, if you haven't cut your process yet?"
****
funkberto (10 months ago) That GROOOOVE!!! wooooow
On the ONE
Thankz from Viña del Mar, Chile.
****
lanceflatul (9 months ago) What a great message that was at the time. … No one like JB!
****
AveIvy (9 months ago) Go 'head JAMES!!! RIP
****
freddypknight (9 months ago) This video recording is an excellent example of the funk of James Brown and his band circa 1967. The sound as well as the image can be heard and seen here. This video is rich in value for even an academic study of James Brown and music.
****
utubeissad (9 months ago) 1969, actually. But you're right - this is good case study.
****
otthisname (9 months ago)He is Rappin......The Godfather of all things hip.
****
omas74 (9 months ago)This is a message for all time for black people in America and other minorities. If you want to take this even further this is for all people...
****
999texmex (7 months ago) just keep on diggin' on James Brown ....
just a thanks for playin" that jungle music" as the old folks said back in the 60's ..... I LOVED it
I can never repay what you taught this white kid , and STILL do .....
****
soulbap82 (7 months ago that bridge is so …funky, it's unreal. that bassline is fat like peanutbutter.
james made the hardest hardcore funk in the late 60s, not pop music! too many still want to put him in that pop music box today.
great video, please, MORE like this!
****
Umskiddy (7 months ago) Listen up...the funk is great but in this case, it is merely an unavoidable, instinctive by-product. What important here is the message.Listen to his words.
****
bpeck77 (7 months ago) You're right. R & B used to say something. Now it's all about jewels, playas, ladies and parties. Back in the 60s and 70s music was a social statement. Not anymore.
****
mazedull(7 months ago) lawdy be, at 1:54 the funk's on me baby
****
quasifree(7 months ago) at 2:16 the Brother is just enjoying himself. Its beautiful.

****
hmsheppard (7 months ago) "Give me schools...give me better books...so I can read about myself and gain my true looks..." …. Funk with a message. God rest the Godfather!
****
beyo2120 (6 months ago) i was just about to comment on the same line! brother james spoke then truth man! RIP
****
hmsheppard (6 months ago) beyo2120: Yes, brotha James was in preacher mode in this clip. He had the cool educator's suit workin'. He was at the zenith of his popularity in 1969. He had the James Brown green stamps, his soul food restaurant, the private aircrafts, the radio stations. This is a man--uneducated himself--who stood for something, who encouraged us to stay in school, to know that we are beautiful, black & proud--at a time when most of America didn't agree. James was a true role model in 1969.
****
eloseddie (6 months ago This is so pertenant today as it was 40 years ago. Heavy.....
****
Tazio72 (6 months ago) The way James Brown is dressed on this TV appearance (suit) is purposely to inspire black people to have proud about themselves. The lyrics are just a motivational masterpiece and the Funk is, as always with him, grooving!
If Obama is the President of the United States...you can get where you want brother! Open up the door and get it! 6 months ago
****
Funkypeople1111 (6 months ago) Ya. That´s the Funk. Just open up the door and see what will happen.
Bro´s & Sis hink about it
****
pollywarrior (5 months ago) Yeah, I like this song. Don't think I'd heard it before. I need to get some James Brown, really, especially his recordings with the "original" JBs.
****
utubeissad Definitely NOT the JB's, but DEFINTELY Clyde. Melvin didn't play on the Mike Douglas show at all this particular week. Only Clyde and Jabo.
****
gmandofgod (4 months ago) You are right on, but I think that it's Melvin Parker on drums.
****
Aiden057 (5 months ago) Anyone know who's in this band? What a great sound and the arrangement is totally good. James is great, too. To bad the quality of the recording is inferior, but thanks for posting it regardless. It's a top-quality performance with a very hip message.

soulbrotherlegendary (5 months ago) This was an excellent piece the band is mad wicked, truly on the One! Thanks for the post 5 months ago
****
utubeissad (5 months ago) This is James Brown's classic 1969 band at its zenith: Richard "Kush" Griffith, Joe Davis (trumpets); Fred Wesley (trombone); Alfred "Pee Wee" Ellis (alto sax); Maceo Parker (tenor sax); St. Clair Pinckney (tenor & baritone sax); Jimmy Nolen, Alfonzo "Country" Kellum (guitars); "Sweet" Charles Sherrell (bass); Clyde Stubblefield, John "Jabo" Starks (drums). This would be the last video of this band before the resignation of bandleader "Pee Wee" Ellis.
****
Aiden057 (5 months ago) Wow, thank you! I was just reading an excellent article in Downbeat Magazine with interviews from several of these great musicians, they reflect on Mr. Brown at the time of his death, but also discussing the arrangements and groove concepts. Maybe the poster of this would consider putting the line-up names into the video headers. Thanks again for the info.
****
Buckeyecat2002 (4 months ago) The Good Reverand Brown, delivering a sermon, as only he can. And yes, he can get a witness.
****
gottobereal03 (4 months ago) Thanks for sharing this song. It is saying
a lot. To get up and get it ourselves and
not wait for somebody to give us something for free. I't ain't happening for
us.

Streamline09 (3 months ago) JB comes clean and correct with the real :-) Thank you for this clip.
****
bmwstan (3 months ago) they always play James I feel Good, you notice the powers that be never play this song, I wonder why.
****
freein2339(2 months ago) @bmwstan I hear you....
****
BSCI70 (2 months ago) They scared of the REAL funk that James was bringing. Do you really think the DJ at an NBA arena will drop "Funky Drummer" or "Soul Power"? Imagine how the players would respond at an NFL game if the PA dropped "Give It Up, Turn It Loose". Too much funk for the suits.
****
jessejames1956 (2 months ago) Because they want everyone to Feel Good and no worry about the obvious! Why don't more young blacks listen to this. I based my life around this song growing up in the South.
****
cavaleer (1 month ago) They've been brainwashed in the last 30 years by all the victim-mongers like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the NAACP etc. It's disgusting.
****
jessejames1956 (1 month ago) The generation that was brainwashed by the so called "fear-mongers". Is doing pretty good. The generation that is being brainwashed by BET, MTV, Tupac, Biggie and Jay-Z, is the one we need to worry about and be disgusted!
****
cavaleer (1 month ago) True but Jesse and Al et al shaped the generations. These media fools have just stepped in and taken over the same roles, with more mindnumbing tools.
****
RasBoomix (1 month ago) True! Ive been a victim of the victim-mongers for years but now CAVALEER I am free>
Speak truth
Live peace
Stay Free
****
cavaleer (1 month ago) Rock on bro, rock on, just like James did.

paceface1972 (3 weeks ago) Clean as the board of health!
****
rayanthonybrown (2 weeks ago) The set looks very much likeThe Mike Douglas Show, were Mr. Brown was invited to perform on numerous ocassions. Classic Brown and tightest band in the land...and yes, stiff audience.
****
powerman2g (1 week ago) It's great that he used his incredible talent to make a statement during a time that needed to hear a message like that. A true pioneer.
