wicca4991 (3 months ago) I'm so thankful my mom introduced me to this music when I was a little girl. We use to always listen to this in the car when we would take road trips. I figured out all the words around the age of 11. This is was music really is! Today's music (although I am only 18) doesn't impress me in the least. I really connect to older songs like this. :-)

snowbunny39 (3 months ago) OMG, I still have this LP intact and I do others!!!!!!!!!!!!! And believe it or not, I still have the LP player intact. Never wanted to throw it away because of all the memories, classic now.

****

PaulineWalters (3 months ago) Love it, love it, love it, love, love it, love it.
This song breaks it down what rap is all about.

****

Wackytornados (2 months ago) this is mostly funk in my opinion

****

Vertigopills (2 months ago) hip-hop came out of the funk/disco scene, they mixed in R&B later

****

falloutgirl902 (2 months ago) Lol its has like 84 verses man i do think people back then were really creative unlike the rappers today who all rap bout the sme thing x

dbd1353 (2 months ago) Man, this is so down. I mean, where else are you going to EVER hear Kayopectate used in a song? I mean, I don't mean to brag don't mean to boast, but I like hot butter on my breakfast toast..Absolutely classic..This is just so funky for words..The dancers are goofy, but somehow they fit..Thanks for posting this..

****

echaba123 (2 months ago) This is how rap should be...

****

honcho501 (2 months ago) This is the real thing!!! It is sad to see how rap deteriorated from this classic delightful music to the garbage that it is today......
****
alex19951998 (2 months ago) Chic provided the funky beat to this original rap song, any pre-90s rap is fine by me

****

TheChosenBurrito (2 months ago) when did rap go wrong?
bring back the funk!
haha
****
lorettasuzette (2 months ago) The Sugar Hill gang rocks! I could listen to Rap all day if it is done the way they did it back then. Just fun and playful. Not hateful and angry. We love you Sugar Hill gang! :)

****

****

josemy99 (1 month ago) yeah!

****

stiflerrambobob23 (1 month ago):) i know every word to this song :D

****

fandelesluthiers (1 month ago) Cool!! 5 stars

****

skm21 (1 month ago) how many lines from this song has been used by modern day artists!

****

wyzarme (1 month ago) This is rap back when it required talent, and back when the lyrics were creative and meshed brilliantly, weaving a complicated, colourful story. Snoop Dogg and Akon look like a baby babbling compared to this.

****

ViceofSpades (1 month ago) This is like the first rap song EVER. Before sure there was rap but nothing like this, this was the start of the new generation. It later gave birth to stuff like N.W.A, Wu Tang Clan, Mobb Deep. Biggie, Tupac and Snoop, which all made rap into what it is today. Without this song the entire world would be different

****

ThePhrozenPhoenix (1 month ago) okay, i know how revolutionary this was, but this should not be rated the greatest rap song of all time. most revolutionary, yes (it gave birth to the whole genre, but that shouldn't automatically make it the best. things such as lyrics and beat should be the primary judging factors. I Used to Love H.E.R. or Brenda's Got a Baby would be much worthier.

****

banditash72 (1 month ago) good times by chic rules. this guys spoil everything by singing rap and meaningless lyrics. because of this song nowadays we have to hear all this rap crap and hip hop crap.

****

08bbygurl (1 month ago) Any one that feels this song isn't one of the greatest or that the lyrics are "meaningless," (@banditash72) apparently doesn't understand the meaning behind the words, and that back in those days artists weren't as blunt about what they wanted to say because that wasn't accepted... Maybe ppl should learn their music history... smh haterZ think they know n just don't...

****

zymbal38 (1 month ago) Revolutionary? ok. The best... compared with what or acoording to who's point of view? There is only one right answer... Mathematics don't lie, numbers are cold. The fact is, this is one of the must succesfull concepts at that time. You have to be very blind or very stupid to challenge success. Instead of argueing, try to understand those days society, read, learn history. ask any real musician. Even if they liked it or not, we all know tjis was really cool back in those days, End of story.

****

xXFelixtheCatXx (3 weeks ago) They don't make it like this anymore...
One of the most legendary tracks EVAR!

****

CdotDixon (2 weeks ago) Haha the dancing looks so dated!
Classic song

****

greekvoice (3 weeks ago) origial rapp/hip hop these songs are the best. funk and rapp from the late 70s and early 80s r the best. btw this is a song by Chic called good times

****

varasmilla (2 weeks ago) @lovegusher I know that the beat is stolen, but this song was the start of rap to everybody, this is history man...

****

erscott13 (2 weeks ago) This is the first rap song ever RECORDED, not first ever. These stole their material from others. A woman named Sylvia Robinson, part of the one-time singing duet Mickey & Sylvia, approached them individually with the idea of recording a rap song. Part of the ethos of rap at that time was that it shouldn't be recorded. So they each "borrowed" the lyrics from friends of theirs. As is well known, the bass line was also stolen, from the group Chic's song, Good Times.

****

sirona30 (2 weeks ago) stolen? you mean in those times no suing was due for this???

****

erscott13 (2 weeks ago) Oh, they got sued all right, but only by Chic. The street rappers didn't sue, as far as I know.

****

chifour66 (2 weeks ago) It wasnt the first ever rap song, just the first commercial success. I was 15 when this came out.Everyone in my school knew the words within a week. Blondie's Rapture was actually written earlier.

****

Gyphia (1 week ago) Take a listen to 'pigmeat markham' with the song 'here comes the judge'. It's on youtube. Year – 1968

****

mcloughlind (1 week ago) love it! real poets!!!!

****

theprooncod99 (1 week ago) epic dance moves

****

fartmaniak (1 week ago) Can you believe the fat one made 2 classics in one verse?
"Throw you hands up in the air and let's party like we just don't care"
and
"Hotel, Motel, Holiday Inn!"
These guys are awesome!

****

kierent73 (1 week ago) This is old skool even for me! I started out with a couple of the electro classics in '86, then Def Jam, then I think I discovered the Sugarhill label (Flash, Sequence, Troublefunk etc too) in '89!  If you're looking for 'proto-hip-hop' from the '60s/'70s, as well as Gil Scott Heron, check out The Last Poets and The Watts Prophets - it was a sound called 'jazzoetry'.

****

mmelindam (6 days ago) I remember having this song on ALBUM. The 15 minute version took up the whole side of an LP....
After all these years I still LOVE this song!!!!
This is the ONLY rap song I've ever loved...How can anyone not dance and smile to this song?!?!?!?

****

mddarch (3 months ago) i'd rather say hip hop cus hip hop is a culture but hip hop involves a person rapping and a dj who makes the real good unique beats to let the music stand out, i doubt any rock and roller could com up with the complex rhymes rappersused to come out with , now i know not too many hip hop artist play a live insrtument but they do have live bands some of the time, give em some credit u make it seem like it aint entertainment, well i guess it is to those who started it and followed it all these years

****

mddarch (4 months ago) atually i think hip hop peaked in the early to mid 90's pr up until 1997 was its peak, the kind of rap in the video is great but it couldnt staylike that for too long it had to evolve or it wouldnt have grown, rap was good in 98'& 99 but the 1989-1997 era was its peak to me

****

xXDomUniqueXx (3 months ago) No, its not. Now rappers are doing more singing with electric voices then even rapping. Now rappers have no substance in their songs. I mean, "hop up out the bed, put my swag onnn, take a look in the mirror say wassup" thats not only lame and terrible but its not rap. Rap ISNT what it used to be. THIS is fun and it IS real because they kept it real. Listen to Master Gee's part. This stuff is exciting and tempts you to rap along. Its family friendly. I can go on and on about how better rap WAS.
