xt4t1k (10 months ago) i saw grandmaster flash at future music festival sydney....all the kids watchin were so off their faces and had absolutly no idea who was playing....thay did not appreciate that they where watching a true pioneer artist who moulded the very culture of D-Jing.....kids were saying "who is grandmaster flash?".......so dissapointing....the place should of been packed!! grandmaster flash is the grandfather of D-Jing!! this is real true rap.....

****

dsignrdane (9 months ago) love the outfits. classic.
soberjudd (1 week ago) The look is part Bootsie Collins and part Village People. Do you think Public Enemy or RunDMC should've followed the fashion sense??

****

CeclanDooney (9 months ago) Can't begin to describe how good this is! It's from a time when hip-hop had something to say ....
****
nameshaveallbeenused (9 months ago) grandmaster flash is the dj, hes not a rapper. its generally melle mel and kidd creole who mc along with other members(cowboy? cant think of any other names, but obviously theres at least 5 of them(furious five)). i assume the lead mc in this is melle mel.
feel free to correct me if im wrong

****

hanssworst (9 months ago) raheim and mr ness are the other two. melle mel is lead mc indeed, and he is also the writer

****

selectajay2000 (5 months ago) hahaha good show..the end was hilarious!.. wow! flash was using 3 turntables that nite? 4:51
..RIP cowboy

****

tr763 (6 months ago) why is the audience only white

****

gurusaguru (6 months ago) The tube was aired in a pretty remote area in the north of england, only now are we getting african immigrants, in 1983 there were virtually none. its getting more diverse now, its well behind the times i suppose.

****

kiran2368 (6 months ago) Performance was in london 1983. Go figure.

****

theoverlord1944 (5 months ago) does it matter?

****

Klevster (3 months ago) Whoever posted this...wow! So dope. Been looking for this for a bit.

****

jclint (3 weeks ago) They inspired some of the big names today and were part of the root of it all. Thanks for the upload. Personally, I still appreciate the pioneers.

****

allinonethegreat (2 weeks ago) Nas got the best classical lyrics that you can hear from years on but hands down the verses from the message will never be topped by any rapper now or in the future. This is as true as reality can get with vivid pictures of the ghettos all over the world andto say these lyrics at the era of hip hop was and still is remarkable today and so forth.

****

stancrijns (1 day ago) Just Amazing

theuros (2 years ago) Wow! It sounds like a playback, but it's just a masterpiece of live performance!

****

avibard (2 years ago) Yea, this is timeless. we could use some rappers today calling for all those peace signs. This songs is still the best and no one has come close to touching the lyrical quality, poetry, and substance of these men.

****

wildcat1559 (2 years ago) Wow! this is as good as it gets these stoopid soulja boy kids today could learn a thing or two. BOW TO THE GRANDMASTER, Yeeyaah!

****

kasper153 (2 years ago) One word. Beautiful! They are the best live ever !! :D

****

djshotokan (2 years ago) The last verse of this song has to be one of the hardest verses in rap history period. and i bet no one even knows that

****

mattthedamon (2 years ago) this is raw right here. beautiful.

****

Shnaarf (2 years ago) that was really well performed. i wish all music these days had a realistic sound to it like this. goes way deeper.

****

westbrom4ever (2 years ago) now compare 50 cent or any so-called rapper and these men here! especially melle mel, wattan inspired performance

****

tvman20002000 (2 years ago) this song is still ahead of it's time today, the beat is amazing

****

SirEdy (1 year ago) Great clip !! this guys are cool, the true rappers.

****

glong86 (1 year ago) Not that I have anything against them but why is everybody in the audience white. I doubt that those whites at the time understood the problems facing the innercity.

****

cheekeeazn (1 year ago) you dont need to be of the same race or culture of the musician to appreciate his music

****

glong86 (1 year ago) True, true I agree and I don't mean any disrespect cheekeeazn. People of different races coming together in music is a beautiful thing.

****

skullylove (1 year ago) Bet you that white kids in the innercity understood them VERY well.

****

JimShadyUK (1 year ago)  It was a British programme in the early 1980's, and it concentrated on showcasing new bands. The majority of bands who played there were indie / rock groups, genres that weren't renowned for attracting black audiences. Whether the audience knew about the problems of the inner city or not doesn't really matter - what does matter is that they got to see the original and greatest rap act ever playing their best song live. It was all about the music, back when rappers actually made music.

****

terryonsax (1 year ago) Ah, The Tube...Sweet memories.
I was in the audience that day 25 years ago right at the front watching these guys. Sounds just as good now as it did all those years ago !!

****

dbox70 (1 year ago) i used to rush my paper round every friday to watch the tube-it was the only place in uk to see people like grandmaster, afrika bambaataa, curtis blow etc. old memories they never fade

****

masterpimpshinchan (1 year ago)  Its kinda funny to see these guys in a dancing/partying type mood talking about peace and love when they're singing a socially aware song like the message.

****

bootsycollinswifey (1 year ago) agreed early 80s and early 90s was when THE BEST I repeat THE BEST hip hop was made, even underground music doesn't come as good as this my opinion

****

RickyMoss (1 year ago) i was only 3 when this came out and I LOVE THIS JAM!! this is the reality of life...the jungle where we strive not to be taken under...dealing with the pressures of society..

****

bootsycollinswifey (1 year ago) lol I was 4 yrs away from being born when this came out...

****

tnrc75 (1 year ago) If there's a better hook in a song, I wanna hear it. Song NEVER gets old.

PepitoSanchez70 (1 year ago) It's a culture heritage. There is no better rapper than Melle Mel: THE ONE AND ONLY MELLE MEL! With his powerful razor-sharp voice he interpretes lyrics, that still are true!
Thanks a lot korkhammaregon!!!

****

bluebus67 (1 year ago) these guys set the bar so high i don't think anybody has ever done it better. true class

****

bettablue1 (1 year ago) OMG! I saw them back in the eighties....one of my favorite songs. Very important lyrics warning about the way our society lets people slip through the cracks in the system sometimes. Also, it's a story song, which is not done often anymore. I saw them at the Ritz in NYC, many years ago when I lived there. I was dancing, ecstatic! These people , whereever they are, seem very sedate! Weird. Thanks so much for posting this! I never thought I'd see them again!

****

Lobo8784 (1 year ago) This is my karaoke jam.

****

graffslik (11 months ago) "The message" is one whole history for hip hop...
will always love this song...

****

nyy2lover (11 months ago) I just learned about this is school! It's actually pretty amazing!! There was a huge recession and a lot of gangs. Afrika Bambaata helped make gang violence turn into peace! perttttyyy cool! Anyway...if you look at the lyrics to this song, (which we had to do in school) it's amazing and I really learned how much some people went through during those times! At first i was kind of bummed to learn this, but now i'm actually pretty interested!!!
Xoxoxo
